We are studying fashion and styles during the Middle Ages through the Elizabethan era concurrently with our standard history curriculum. Seeing what people wore during that time in history helps to bring the people "to life" as we study about them. I have two daughters, age 12 and 10. We ordered three Dover Fashion Coloring Books which overlap the time span we are covering. All of the Dover books are good quality, with just enough info along with the pictures to be insightful but not laboriously boring. Would recommend!

I met Tom Tierney many years ago. He is a pleasant and engaging fellow and more than happy to talk to aspiring artists. Here he tackles the fashions of the Medieval period with fine line drawings and brief notes. I especially like the way he depicts ALL classes of people during this period. The young, old, wealthy and peasant. If you are recreating period clothing for reenactment, stage or film, this book should be a part of your library.

My 6 and 8 year-old granddaughters love this book. It's nicely drawn and has interesting captions. Should have bought one for each girl. I'd definitely consider other books by this author.

There are costume reference books for me. I won't be coloring in them. If I do want to play with color, I will make a copy of a page so I don't mess up the original. I find the line drawings very interesting and like that the pictures cover different social classes.

I bought this and other similar books to use in teaching history, especially to my younger students. (Even the older students like them, although they don't like to admit it!) Each picture is accompanied by an in-depth description of the clothing which contains all of the obscure and archaic terms once given to items of dress and so it's usable whether or not students color the images. Very nice asset to the history classroom!

My granddaughter (10 years old) loved it. She is a fashionista.

As a professional artist, I love stuff like this! It may look like, and serve as a children's book, but the content is extremely detailed and educational. There are pages dedicated to headdresses and helmets only! It's really hard to find good reference books like this one, and the art style is pleasing to the eyes. The forewords are quite helpful as well, which nicely summarizes the fashion trends of the historical period.And now I'm off to snatch every single book made by the artist...

We used this book for our dance kinesiology class. It has a lot of great info and images in it, but it also has a little too much in it. Wish it had more somatics, but it definitely covers everything in depth.

Better than the last edition because of the video supplements. Highly recommended for teachers or students with kinesiological knowledge.

Excellent resource for dancers! A perfect companion for a university dance kinesiology course.

About the Author

Yoshitaka Amano was born in 1952 in Shizuoka, Japan, the youngest child of a WWII veteran who worked in the traditional Japanese lacquer ware arts. Amano went pro in 1967 at the age of 15, as the youngest person to be hired by legendary anime studio Tatsunoko, where his first job was on the famous anime series Speed Racer. By 17, he had been made the studio's character concept artist, a new kind of industry position created specifically for him. Well-known anime characters designed by Amano in the 1970s include the cast of Gatchaman, also known as Battle of the Planets--of whom superstar comics painter and Gatchaman fan Alex Ross (Kingdom Come) has said, "They belong among the pantheon of great characters." In the 1980s, Amano designed the cast of Genesis Climber Mospeada, known to fans around the world as the third part of the TV series Robotech (Robotech: The New Generation). In 1985 Amano partnered with director Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell) and Hayao Miyazaki's early producer Hideo Ogata to create the feature-length The Angel's Egg, often considered the most personal of Oshii's anime films.In the 1980s, Amano began to develop an independent career as one of Japan's most sought-after character and design illustrators, painting hundreds of science fiction and fantasy magazine book covers. His mysterious, atmospheric style attracted the creators of a new video game concept in 1987 called Final Fantasy, who hired Amano to give a distinctive artistic vision to the game. Amano would go on to design the characters, monsters, weapons, and treasures of the first ten Final Fantasy games, visually influencing a worldwide fan base through the new frontier of video games, as he had earlier done through the medium of anime.While remaining in high demand as a commercial illustrator, Amano entered the fine arts world beginning in 1989 with his first exhibition of original art in Tokyo, and in 1995 his first outside Japan, at the Biennale d'Orléans in France. In 1997 he made his New York art world debut with the exhibit Think Like Amano, and the following year worked with the Los Angeles Philharmonic to create the animated concert film 1001 Nights. A fan of US comic books since he discovered Neal Adams in the 1960s, Amano's New York exhibit led to his first work in American comics, when he was asked to create a poster for the 10th anniversary of Sandman, a project that put him in touch with Neil Gaiman, with whom he would collaborate on Sandman: The Dream Hunters; for Marvel, he would create Elektra & Wolverine: The Redeemer with Greg Rucka. Maintaining studios today in Paris and Tokyo and travelling frequently to international events, in the 21st century Amano continues to take on commissions, while devoting the majority of his working time to personal projects. In 2013, Dark Horse Comics, which has released over 40 books illustrated by Amano, was the first in the world to publish Yoshitaka Amano's debut original novel, Deva Zan, containing dozens of accompanying paintings. I had been waiting since March to receive this book and when it came in this week my high expectations were surpassed. The slipcase for the 2 books and DVD case/lithographs is really high quality. Had a great texture and design and is very sturdy. Both books are of great quality in color and type of paper used. Both lithographs are quite lovely, a VHD and a FF. I have not watched the DVD yet, but I can barely wait. As they might say, you are definitely getting your bang for your buck with this book.

I've always been a big fan of Yoshitaka Amano and this book is a must-buy for fans. Fascinating interviews, facts I never knew, and the wonderful art had me enthralled. It humanizes Amano in so many ways and the writing is top-notch. The one thing this makes me feel is I hope there's one day a Final Fantasy game in Amano's original style!

As a fan of Amano’s work for nearly 30 years, I Loved everything about this set from the amazing quality, to the lovely presentation of all items and exquisite overall presentation. Dark Horse in general has been making some impressive volumes lately. Highly recommend. Nothing feels cheap or like they skimped on anything. If you are a fan, this should occupy a very prominent place on your bookshelf. It’s a charismatic multimedia presentation and an amazing conversation starter for those new to Amano’s work.

I vaguely remember greatly enjoying this book when I was young and decided to read it for a challenge this year. I'm glad I did as I was enchanted by the book again.The story follows a deer mouse named Poppy. She and her boyfriend defy the local law of asking the resident owl of the neighborhood, Mr. Ocax, permission to move beyond the house they live in. As a result, her boyfriend is killed and eaten by Mr. Ocax. Immediately after, Poppy's father decides the family has gotten too big for the abandoned house they live in and seeks to petition Mr. Ocax for permission to move to New House up the road some. When Mr. Ocax denies his permission, Poppy sets out on an adventure to find out what Mr. Ocax is hiding about New House.I think this is a fantastic book for children, but maybe not those too young or those that would be greatly disturbed by the death of a character (especially one who was the focus of the first book in the series). This would be particularly good for young girls. It teaches lessons on believing in yourself and fighting against the bad people. There are also the standard lessons of making friends and making good on your word. Also, there is a lesson on not believing everything you are told until you find out the facts for yourself. The writing style is very fluid and the language is wonderful. There is no shortage of interesting words or vocabulary to help a youngster's vocabulary grow.It was honestly a delightful book that I enjoyed reading and was able to still, as an adult, feel for the characters and get pulled into the story. There is one character that is actually quite hilarious for adults to read as he has an adult's view of young people. I am a father of four girls and I've just finished reading this book (and others in the series) to my youngest who is 7. The story captures both of us everytime we pick it up.The overarching messages delivered are archetypal truths we all contend with. Not stories of oppression, luck, or merely fantasy; but stories that truly depict the struggles each of us face and the possibilities that ensue when we face them honestly and forthrightly. There are many things to be scared of in life, and they cannot be eliminated. The only way to overcome them is, to be honest, and face them head-on with your future, and the future of society at the forefront of your decision making. This series is the type of literature that lifts up society and encourages generations. Yes, I highly recommend them!

I liked this story very much! Poppy is very brave for a mouse and learns she has the courage to solve her families problem of keeping everyone fed. You will love it

Easy to read, but has little deapth. The characters are shallow, the story is predictable, and there isn't much in the way of insight or meaning.

Poppy and her friends keep us both laughing and crying, and having deep conversations on social issues. A wonderful read-aloud.

My kids and I read this aloud and really enjoyed this book.

I really enjoyed reading this book to my 8 and 6-year olds who couldn’t wait to tackle it after we finished Poppy. It’s sweet and smart and funny. With the level of vocabulary it’s not something they could read independently and I appreciated that the story was enjoyable for me as well.

The best by a mile.Anyone familiar with Explorer's Guides to Maine or Vermont knows what kind of quality to expect here, but there's a catch. This particular guide IS getting a bit out of date.Here's the thing. New Hampshire is all about heritage tourism and outdoor exploration. Those things change very little over time, so the guide still has validity despite its age. Don't expect pricing and timing information to be up to date, but recommendations are still spot on. Historical and cultural contexts are still informative and entertaining.Despite a bit of age and a lack of flashy color photography, this is your best guide to the Granite State.

In some respects, New Hampshire has it all ways. Close enough to the I-95 corridor to be in range of Boston and readily accessible to travelers, but with a surprisingly vast hinterland of forests, lakes, mountains, and small towns, all likely to be interesting to the visitor willing to explore. Clear, easy to read, and well organized, like all of Christina Tree's Explorer's Guides. It would be great if an update could be made to the restaurants and inns, but the book is valuable as is. So much simpler taking this tome along on the trip than spending hours drifting on the web.

Best travel guide I have ever read. I liked it so much that I just ordered the Explorer's Guides to Maine and Vermont. The book has everyhing about New Hampshire: history, food, antique stores, farmers' markets, establishment hours, lodging, scenic drives, places off the beaten path, et al. I am hoping that my Vermont and Maine guides measure up because Ms Tree and Hamm have set a pretty high bar with this one. I will be visiting New Hampshire this fall for the foliage viewing and I am well versed in what New Hampshire has to offer. Well done!
