For starters, I wouldn't necessarily recommend this as a beginners book. While it does have a lot of great information in it, it's definitely not going to teach you anything about drawing fundamentals such as shading, perspective, etc. It's really a quick and easy book full of various topics, with drawings ranging from the simple to the complex. While there's definitely some guidance provided, there are a few items that go from "here's a few lines" to "bam complete" - the architecture section in particular.As someone who really wanted some ideas/brainstorming for my bullet journal spreads, this book was a godsend. Lots of quick and easy ideas that can be mixed and matched for maximum effect. I was primarily interested in using it for bullet journaling, but I'm also enjoying trying my hand at some of the architectural options such as the coffee shop that I drew.Took off one star because my book came a bit dented, but I love the style and overall artwork too much to return for a new one.
I’ve tried many drawing books and found them to be either too simplistic or way over my head. This is the perfect book because it is accessible to people at all levels. It also has very robust content covering many topics. In working with this book, it is as if the author is sitting right next to you, coaching you along. I am very impressed with this book and will buy additional copies for gifts.
I can draw, I am currently trying to sketch daily outdoors but I was having difficulty sketching quickly. My drawings were not coming out as expected - I needed help. I came across this book and figured this would assist. It has simple, detailed instructions with valuable tips. It covers Tools, Basic Drawing techniques, Borders and Banners, Lettering, Botanicals: (leaves, flowers, plants, trees), City Buildings, Animals and Insects. It is quite helpful so far.
Well laid out book with accessible instructions & tips that are still interesting and valuable to someone with a higher skill level. As a professional designer and illustrator I picked up Erin's book to learn more about how she approaches her unique style and to see what kinds of tips and tricks she might have to share. I was not disappointed.
The idea of this book is excellent, but the execution was lacking. Most of the images/designs are very basic, but even within that approach the details are lacking. It is like giving someone only the highlights- basic step, few details and then voila finished. Between the early details and the end needed more guidance. If the author is assuming a lot of knowledge is had by the reader then much of the book is too basic and beginner level. If she is not assuming the knowledge and it is a beginner book then she needed to offer more. I am glad I decided to get the kindle version and save some money, but still disappointed. Very little to take away from this one.
This is a great book for artists at all levels. I've been working on and off for years on drawing, painting and other creative endeavors, and really enjoyed the tutorials and working through Erin's easy to follow instructions. My 6 year old has also enjoyed seeing the step by step instructions and is starting to think a little differently about shape and color. I would buy it again!
I like the look, the organization, and the feel of this book, and thus far it has been a nice resource. In the description, of course, it mentions a section for hand-lettering— this I expected and looked forward to. It would be nice to have more examples than the trendy pseudo-calligraphy style— but what’s there is sufficient to practice and develop that font.I love the other sections. The paper is a nice thickness and can support the author-encouraged doodling and sketching on each page. It’s a good beginning for those who want to experiment more with drawing past simple figures, like myself. The author provides a simple few examples to follow-along with, and trusts you to diversify and learn on your own. That’s fair— but for having so many pages, it would have been nice to see more variety of impetuses.
I’m a hobbyist drawer/painter and have been in love with Erin’s work for years. I was so excited when she announced this book that I pre-ordered it immediately. I just got it and am already in love. It is so detailed and thorough, so organized and impressive. All of that, plus it’s just so dang beautiful!! I would buy this for anyone wanting to learn kids, teens, adults alike.
