Ms. Wolf does a good job with this book, in terms of presenting the history of society's perception of female sexuality (and, since, most societies were patriarchal in nature, the book is in large part about men's perception of female sexuality). She illuminates a fascinating, sometimes occluded history, making the case that philosophers of ancient antiquity actually had a more progressive view of women's reproductive systems than more contemporary Victorian thinkers. One example is her contrasting of Hippocrates' view that women needed to achieve orgasm to conceive ("bursting forth with seed") versus the opinion of a distinguished 19th century doctor, who equated female sexual desire with being the sole province of prostitutes. The tone of the work is sometimes light and humorous, other times tragic, but never (and this is important) strident or combative. Too many men have a skewed view of feminism, equating it with the more extreme second-wave iterations, like Valerie Solanis, who I believe wanted to kill or castrate all men. I don't get the sense from this work that Ms. Wolf hates men, either from an ideological standpoint, or from a personal, sexual standpoint. My only gripe with the book (my reason for the four, rather than five star rating) is that the author sometimes spends quite a bit of time telling us things every lay person already knows, regardless of how acquainted they are with feminism. It's been said that the purpose of a social scientist is to spend several years learning what everyone already knows, which is fine, and probably true to an extent, except Wolf doesn't do this with social science; she does it with hard science, taking up page after page to bless the reader with chestnuts, such as 1) Women like to talk more than men 2) Women like to cuddle after sex, whereas men prefer to sleep, and so on.That's a minor complaint, though, directed at an otherwise solid overview of the vagina, that is by no means comprehensive, but serves as a more than sufficient introduction to an important topic.

This is the first - and only - book I have read to date that seems to get it right about female sexuality. The powerful mind-body connection between female genitals, sexual expression, and our lives, thinking and emotions doesn't get the attention it deserves in our educations, our lives, or in medicine. Reading this book is not just one long 'aha!' moment, for me as a female person with a vagina, but in some parts moves me to tears, feeling finally at long last understood - and understandable. Finally - it's not that women are crazy; our complex sexuality interacts on multiple levels with our emotional experience, our cognition, and even our very physical health. This changes so much for me - from how I view my relationships, to how I select a physician in the future, how I treat myself as a human sexual being, even to understanding why masturbation never ever carries the same powerful delight and satisfaction that partnered sexual activity can. I am moved, educated, reassured - and changed. The holiday gift giving season just got easier for me - anyone who doesn't own this book, and does know women, will be getting a copy of this for their next birthday, or gifting holiday.

I found the book very informative, although her anatomy is often weak, e.g. there is no’s such named nerve as the pelvic nerve, and there is no such vertebra as L6, but otherwise is a very thought provoking book.

This book is so powerful and filled with useful information. Even if couples only read the second half, it may save many marriages. But in its entirety it is history, anthropology, anatomy, biology, psychology all rolled into one book. I'm grateful Naomi Klein researched and wrote this book and that me and my book club took the time to read it.

Did not quite understand the direction of the book. It started as a Physiological book about the woman’s body and how injuries can effect a woman’s ability to have an orgasm, then for the next 200 or so pages it went over the historical oppression of women and how the sexual revolution possibly made things worse (or something like that). I failed to see the connection between the two or the book did not make it clear.

Every woman and man should read this to understand the challenges we have faced in explaining why sex does or doesn't feel like we hoped it would. Women, get your feelings validated. Men, learn what your partner actually needs to feel physically fulfilled and reap the benefits. We ARE different, and there are great benefits to be gained from understanding this. Read it and reap.

I usually enjoy what Naomi Wolf writes--her writing seems effortlessly narrative and informed, and I like her modernist feminist viewpoint (compared to my viewpoint, which, given my age practically dates from the E.C. Stanton era).Despite this book's title, it's a lot more than a compendium of dry biological information on a physical organ. It's also a look at the sort of treatment vaginas, and thereby women, are subject to. She hits up history, psychology, the porn industry, women's views of themselves. You name it, she takes you there through a lens you've probably never used before.I'd recommend this book to pretty much any woman, seeing as every woman is equipped with a vagina, but even more to men, for whom the concept and the physical reality is alien.

This is a MUST READ for everyone. I am somewhat expert in the field, and I learned a lot.

Law's Empire

Review

“Refreshing and rewarding… Law’s Empire is Dworkin’s framework for the analysis of critical issues in law; and such are the elegance and power of the book that one who has read it may find it hard to return patiently to the stale and shallow categories…in which so much argument about the role of judges is nowadays conducted.”―Edwin M. Yoder, Jr., Washington Post Book World“Rich and multi-layered… The first sustained, full-length treatment of [Dworkin’s] general theory of law… It is an ambitious book, and it does not disappoint the expectations appropriate to a major work by an important thinker. Dworkin has developed a complex and powerful system of ideas, and they are expounded here with the clarity and elegance to which his readers are by now accustomed.”―Thomas Nagel, London Review of Books“A 470-page vision of law accessible to the educated layman… An unusual opportunity for laymen to…cross swords with the very vibrant emperor of contemporary legal thought.”―Philadelphia Inquirer“Law’s Empire is a challenging, important, and richly textured work of legal philosophy written in the vivid and commanding style that Dworkin’s readers have come to expect… [It offers] both a conception of law that explains what our law is and an underlying political theory that explains why we should conceive of our law in that way… Dworkin seeks, ultimately, nothing less than a kind of unified field theory of moral justification: a theory that would unite―or at least connect―personal morality, legal justification, and political legitimacy.”―Silas Wasserstrom, Georgetown Law Journal“Ronald Dworkin is America’s leading legal philosopher… [Law’s Empire bears] testimony to his eminence, evidencing his analytical ingenuity, powerful imagination, and elegant conceptualization. No subject ever seems quite the same after one has read Dworkin’s treatment of it.”―Journal of Philosophy

Must read.

I needed to get this book in my hands rapidly. You fulfilled all my hopes completely!

The great book of legal philosophy in the 20th century was Hart's "The Concept of Law," but I would put this book at number two. It is beautifully written and meticulously worked out. There is much to learn from this book about the law and about how to think creatively about any subject!

CAME ON TIME. GOT THIS FOR MY DAD. I AM SURE HE WILL ENJOY IT! I WILL BE READING IT NEXT LOL

Ronald Dworkin is one of the most prominent law philosophers in the common law tradition. Known both in America and Britain for his strong democratic positions, baptized by Duncan Kennedy `orthodox centrism', Dworkin is an acid critic of the paradigms of the contemporaneous jurisprudence. Teaching law both in London and New York, the author unites the best of the old and the new world's linguistic and philosophical theories. He is well aware of the main `external' influences of law studies, such as the linguistics of Wittgenstein, the utilitarianism of Austin and Bentham, the categorical imperative of Kant, the dialectical approach of Habermas, and many more epistemic precursors of the modern law science. And from the legal benches he invites to debate scholars as Hart, Nozick, Rawls, etc. This book follows his theoretical controversies initiated in A Matter of Principle and Taking Rights Seriously. Dworkin has the `humble' objective of deconstructing the base of the legal theory, forging a new conception of law itself. Facing the legal positivism creed (as in Kelsen) with the skeptical panorama (legal realism as in Holmes), this author proposes a third way of law interpretation with he calls `law as integrity'. Integrity conception of law is inspirited in the third motto of the French Revolution: `fraternity'. Law is seen as a product of a `community of principles', as in the roman adage ubi societas ubi jus. For him any interpretation of the law, the common law or the Constitution must be impregnated with the will of integrity, noted as a commitment with the political morals of a given society in a given time. He sees the Constitution as the repository of the three biggest law principles: adjective due process, fairness and justice. His works (as all things in life) owes applauses and reproves. Its strong points are the impact of his critics, surely shaking the base of the `obvious arguments' of law. Ancient myths as objectiveness and law fidelity of the judge had been collapsed. Notwithstanding the foregoing, what he calls a new proposal - `law as integrity' - is an old hermeneutic method of the jurist from the Romanist systems (as in Brazil, where I come from). Law interpretation grounded in principles is a well-known method in other juridical, non-utilitarian practices. Long ago a Portuguese scholar named Canotilho constructed a method in which the mining (or creating) of the legal rule to a concrete situation is done in the light of the Constitution and its basic political principles, such as: equality, liberty, morality, good faith, inter alia. This kind of `principiologic' conception perhaps came from a tradition in which law and justice were reputed as equals, and principles were expressions of natural rights given by god or breed in reason. Nevertheless, I am not trying to underestimate the Herculean (to use a metaphor from his book) work of Professor Dworkin, his bridges between the opposite notions - legal rule and precedents, conventionalism and skepticism, objectivity and subjectivity - are themselves diligent analysis of the law phenomena. I can also say - with no fear of overstating - he is an untamable critic and an intransigent adversary of any kind of academic (or even pragmatic) hypocrisy in law.

the item came as described by the seller! i needed it for my class the following week and thankfully got it in time! fast shipping! excellent seller!

This book would have been fine had it been published 20 years ago before the saturation of critical theory. Now it just feels like a wounded discourse from someone who went to grad school in the 60's.

Friends from Amazon,A enjoy very much buying items with you guys. You have a long catalog, and deliver items quickly. It happened with all the recent items i've bought. But with the book Law's Empire, the person who has delivered it here in my building did not hand it to the doorman. The book was thrown through the gate and was found on the floor.I mean, the book is ok, it is not damaged, but it was a weird way to deliver.Thank you for your attention.Antonio Cabral from Brazil
