What I appreciated most about this book was that the goal isn't to be a better mom, do more, make more, or get more people to like you. There's no repeating shallow affirmations or using the power of imagination to make six figures. It's a real look at how you talk to yourself and treat yourself and why. Then it has you figure out a better way. The excersizes are powerful yet quick and easy and there's no homework. The messages have really stuck with me. "The struggle is real. Suffering is optional." "You are always a new parent." I appreciate the author's perspective as a mom and studier of moms. She draws from different studies as well as her own market research. I feel like it does a good job of reaching across a lot of aisles and being useful to all kinds of moms. I'm a first time SAHM of a one-year-old, but I can see a four time single mom who works outside the house getting just as much use. I was going to loan out my copy, but I know I'm going to want to read this every few years, so I'm gifting it to three other moms right now and I'm sure I'll gift more.

I love the metaphor of the dragon of self doubt. While this book didn't offer anything wildly new or different, I found it helpful and encouraging. Unlike a lot of books targeted towards mothers, it felt inclusive to all women. The metaphor of dragon slaying has really stuck with me and this is a book I could see myself revisiting.

My children would ask me to read it again and again, as there is something soothing – and magical – about its simplicity. This is equally true of the simple act of cuddling up with your children to read, which can serve as a magical balm for the winter blues.

Loved the hardcover book we got out of the library, so I was very happy to see the board book available to give as a gift to a one year old. In our experience, Dr Seuss hardcover books have shortened stories when converted to a board book, but I was very pleasantly surprised to see all original pages present in the board book version of this!

This book has been outstanding! We got it when my daughter was 18 months old and she has been obsessed ever since. She loves to act out the motions and read with or without an adult because she has memorized what to do on each page. We've discussed the seasons as they occur related to the book and reference it when we are outside. It is so nice to have an engaging non-technology book in our arsenal that she gets excited about! We've have shared the book with friends and family and it is now my go-to for baby showers!

Honestly I thought this book was boring and either the interactive directions were confusing and did not make sense or I was just so uninterested that I just simply did not pay attention. It was hard for my 4 year old to pay attention as well. Out of all the interactive books that I have purchased I would say this is my least favorite.

This book is brilliant- it teaches about the seasons by allowing children to play an active role. My preschoolers thought it was magical! I printed and laminated each of them a tree so they could follow the directives in the book and each activity participate. It is the perfect book for toddlers and preschool children.

This is a CHARMING book absolutely made for sitting with a young child on one's lap to read. The notion that the child "makes" the story happen by tapping on the pages is magical and creates a nice surprise for the child (and the adult!). It is a quiet book, full of feeling and wonder. (To preserve the wonder, I put this away for special reading times.)

About the Author

Tim Reynolds has worked for many years as a radiographer in the NHS. Outside of clinical work Tim has worked in radiographic education for more than 20 years. Tim was a nationally elected member of the College of Radiographers Council. During his time on Council he was a member of the team that liaised with the Dental Nurse Standards Advisory Board to jointly develop the syllabus of study which provided the model for dental nurse radiography courses. He also sat on the National Executive of the British Radiation Protection Association. Formerly Principal Tutor for the Diagnostic Radiography undergraduate course at Keele University, Tim now runs his own educational consultancy specialising in radiography training for dental nurses.

I found the case he makes for adaptive investing to be tight and contemporary. His basic premise is that humans are hard wired to respond emotionally to the changes that emerge from complex adaptive systems--a mix of fear, regret, greed, and pride. As he points out, the problem with the emotional or "gut" approach is that it leads us to make misguided and even wrong decisions that hold the potential for hurting our hard earned "nest eggs." The approach that Ernst articulates in The Adaptive Investment Portfolio removes emotion from investment decisions and helps us maximize risk-adjusted return amid the turbulence and complexity of the markets. There are three key principles: (1) divide your portfolio into strategic (asset classes and distribution), tactical (take advantage of market inefficiencies and momentum), and diversification (hedge with gold and managed futures); (2) rebalance to maintain discipline; and, (3) be mindful of how taxes can affect your decisions. He makes a strong case for not focusing our portfolios entirely on passive index funds; that active managers can (if we pick the right ones) add tremendous value. The adaptiveness of his investment approach is really appealing, because it takes advantage of market volatility rather than eschewing it and hiding from it. Perhaps the best part of the book is that it is well written, clearly articulated, and Ernst's voice comes through as though he is sitting across a table from you chatting about investing over coffee.
