Ms. Wolf does a good job with this book, in terms of presenting the history of society's perception of female sexuality (and, since, most societies were patriarchal in nature, the book is in large part about men's perception of female sexuality). She illuminates a fascinating, sometimes occluded history, making the case that philosophers of ancient antiquity actually had a more progressive view of women's reproductive systems than more contemporary Victorian thinkers. One example is her contrasting of Hippocrates' view that women needed to achieve orgasm to conceive ("bursting forth with seed") versus the opinion of a distinguished 19th century doctor, who equated female sexual desire with being the sole province of prostitutes. The tone of the work is sometimes light and humorous, other times tragic, but never (and this is important) strident or combative. Too many men have a skewed view of feminism, equating it with the more extreme second-wave iterations, like Valerie Solanis, who I believe wanted to kill or castrate all men. I don't get the sense from this work that Ms. Wolf hates men, either from an ideological standpoint, or from a personal, sexual standpoint. My only gripe with the book (my reason for the four, rather than five star rating) is that the author sometimes spends quite a bit of time telling us things every lay person already knows, regardless of how acquainted they are with feminism. It's been said that the purpose of a social scientist is to spend several years learning what everyone already knows, which is fine, and probably true to an extent, except Wolf doesn't do this with social science; she does it with hard science, taking up page after page to bless the reader with chestnuts, such as 1) Women like to talk more than men 2) Women like to cuddle after sex, whereas men prefer to sleep, and so on.That's a minor complaint, though, directed at an otherwise solid overview of the vagina, that is by no means comprehensive, but serves as a more than sufficient introduction to an important topic.

This is the first - and only - book I have read to date that seems to get it right about female sexuality. The powerful mind-body connection between female genitals, sexual expression, and our lives, thinking and emotions doesn't get the attention it deserves in our educations, our lives, or in medicine. Reading this book is not just one long 'aha!' moment, for me as a female person with a vagina, but in some parts moves me to tears, feeling finally at long last understood - and understandable. Finally - it's not that women are crazy; our complex sexuality interacts on multiple levels with our emotional experience, our cognition, and even our very physical health. This changes so much for me - from how I view my relationships, to how I select a physician in the future, how I treat myself as a human sexual being, even to understanding why masturbation never ever carries the same powerful delight and satisfaction that partnered sexual activity can. I am moved, educated, reassured - and changed. The holiday gift giving season just got easier for me - anyone who doesn't own this book, and does know women, will be getting a copy of this for their next birthday, or gifting holiday.

I found the book very informative, although her anatomy is often weak, e.g. there is no’s such named nerve as the pelvic nerve, and there is no such vertebra as L6, but otherwise is a very thought provoking book.

This book is so powerful and filled with useful information. Even if couples only read the second half, it may save many marriages. But in its entirety it is history, anthropology, anatomy, biology, psychology all rolled into one book. I'm grateful Naomi Klein researched and wrote this book and that me and my book club took the time to read it.

Did not quite understand the direction of the book. It started as a Physiological book about the woman’s body and how injuries can effect a woman’s ability to have an orgasm, then for the next 200 or so pages it went over the historical oppression of women and how the sexual revolution possibly made things worse (or something like that). I failed to see the connection between the two or the book did not make it clear.

Every woman and man should read this to understand the challenges we have faced in explaining why sex does or doesn't feel like we hoped it would. Women, get your feelings validated. Men, learn what your partner actually needs to feel physically fulfilled and reap the benefits. We ARE different, and there are great benefits to be gained from understanding this. Read it and reap.

I usually enjoy what Naomi Wolf writes--her writing seems effortlessly narrative and informed, and I like her modernist feminist viewpoint (compared to my viewpoint, which, given my age practically dates from the E.C. Stanton era).Despite this book's title, it's a lot more than a compendium of dry biological information on a physical organ. It's also a look at the sort of treatment vaginas, and thereby women, are subject to. She hits up history, psychology, the porn industry, women's views of themselves. You name it, she takes you there through a lens you've probably never used before.I'd recommend this book to pretty much any woman, seeing as every woman is equipped with a vagina, but even more to men, for whom the concept and the physical reality is alien.

This is a MUST READ for everyone. I am somewhat expert in the field, and I learned a lot.
