We purchased this book in July. My son had already taken the test throughout his junior year and we used a personal tutor $$$. We saw minor improvement in his score , not much. I gave him this book in August as one last opportunity to improve his score on the Sept test in his senior year.We kind of accepted his previous scores but gave it a shot.He jumped 8 points! He used the strategies in this book and did several practice tests as well too. He was much more comfortable and didn't feel pressure when he took the test.He learned new strategies he didn't know. This book gives very specific details on how to understand the questions and strategies in a very simple way.He got a 30 and it's a game changer for him and his selection in schools.

I am a test prep tutor and this is an excellent supplemental ACT study guide. I especially like the features of practice questions and sample quizzes ranging from easy to tough. Concepts are explained thoroughly in a way that is easy for students to understand. My son's math tutor has exhausted her supply of official ACT materials and has assigned him material from this book. She also thinks it's very good. Any student who dilligently uses this guide along with the ACT should be well-prepared for the test.

This is a great study guide!! I am an ACT prep coach. This is the best study guide on the market for students who need an extensive review in math in order to raise scores. The English review and exercises are also quite good. This also was one of the first texts to offer a comparative passage practice in the reading comprehension review. The science prep is weak, but...The practice tests are excellent. If your students scores well on those, they will do well on the actual ACT.

I am in full agreement with Vince here. For only $13, this is an excellent, thorough introduction to the updated ACT.The reality of the test-prep publishing world these days is that name-brand companies like Barron's simply contract private tutors, such as me and Vince and Mr. Stewart, to write their books. Hence, the quality of the books is not just a reflection of the company's ability, but also a reflection of the author's expertise. Mr. Stewart seems to have been an excellent choice for Barron's in this instance.Of course, you should also buy the Real ACT Prep Guide The Real ACT Prep Guide (Book + Bonus Online Content), (Reprint) (Official Act Prep Guide) because it's the only source of Official ACT questions. However, the Real ACT Prep Guide (as you can tell from the many negative customer reviews) has not been updated to reflect the new ACT Writing (essay) portion, while this book from Barron's has in fact been updated to reflect the recent changes. So in that aspect, this book is even better than the real thing.I would not recommend paying the extra $7 for the CD-ROM; there is more than enough material in the book itself.For my personalized, frequently updated recommendations for ACT Prep, google "ACT Action Plan - McElroy Tutoring."

PROS: Great book, nice explanations, lots of practice, we bought it at a great price.CONS: They sometimes only offer one way to solve a problem, no alternative ways.It would be nicer to have the answers after each section.

I came across THE BOOK while looking for a new text for my History of Publishing course, and after reading it adopted it and revamped the course. Nicole Howard has done an excellent done of telling the story of the book—its origins, economics, labor history and technological development. We learn about papyrus and parchment and paper; the invention of movable type, including the lawsuits between Gutenberg and his business partners (he lost) and the role of the alphabet in printing; the development of books sizes, topics, and print runs; paratext and illustration; book banning and copyright; industrialization and computerization; and the reaction of the labor force to change. As a reader, I wish the book had been longer, but as a teacher it’s just right. Well organized, clearly explained and replete with illustrations, yet with plenty of room for students to find topics for further research.

The book wove together information I had from other sources such as the role of the Irish scribes. I am an avid reader and enjoyed the explaination of the printing process and the rise of the paperback novel. I have recommended this book to archivists and antiquarian scholars.

A good introduction to the subject; one reviewer called it "serviceable" and I would agree. It tells you all you need to know in clear prose -- great for an undergraduate, perhaps too linear for graduate students.

Good historical record of book development. Was relatively dry, and I could have used more illustrations especially about fonts.

I purchsed this book for a class I was taking. I found the book to be delightfully informative without being boring or overly flowery. If you are interested in the history of the book, pick this up. You will not be disappointed.

Could not get into it

The book is very boring although it provides much publishing history. This was a required book for a publishing class but I did not get passed the first chapter.

This is a useful book if you are looking for a standard and readable history of the book. It seemed to me authoritative, but its citations are a bit skimpy. Sometimes the author tells us where she's getting her information, and at other times she doesn't. The bibliography is OK.Howard doesn't advance an argument or any new thesis about the history of the book. Rather, this is a conventional history of a technology, based on evolution, progress, development. I wish she had had more to say about what newer technological changes actually pose to the relevance of the book itself. She just assumes that the book will always be important, but I think this is a presumption that might require some more reflection.

He just lived with delusions and his own version of reality.I liked the unique names of the Jones children: California, Sedona, Dakota, and Sierra…interesting quirks that set them apart.Besides mental health issues, the story dealt with substance abuse, treatment, and recovery, and my work with clients over the years helped me connect to the stories told by those in recovery.Of course there was a bit of romance. Who wouldn’t fall for the gorgeous firefighter named Conrad (Connie) Boyle? I enjoyed the slow and gradual connection that grew between Sierra and Connie, an appropriate progression for wounded souls.Just when I was sinking into the daily drama of addiction and recovery, a stunning danger came reeling into Sierra’s life, the detritus of the messy past that Sierra had been fearing, and there were some intense moments that kept me glued to the pages…and then came that predictable yet comforting happy ending. 4.5 stars.

FINAL DECISION: Serious but not dark look at a woman who is trying to rebuild her life and the man she meets who helps her look to the future. Enjoyable and soul enriching story that focuses on hope and redemption.THE STORY: Sierra Jones has come to Sullivan's Crossing as part of the beginning of her new life. She comes to be close to her brother (Cal from WHAT WE FIND) as she works on her recovery from addiction. As she moves day to day in building a new life, she finds herself becoming part of the community and meeting Conrad (Connie) Boyle, a local firefighter with whom she begins spending time. But even as the future begins to unfold, darkness from Sierra's part threatens her future.OPINION: This is a serious and thoughtful look at a woman who is struggling to rebuild her life and the sweet man who doesn't want complicated, but can't help but be attracted to it.Sierra is a woman who is working hard to recover from her addiction. This book is unflinching in its portrayal but this isn't a downer book. Indeed, this book is about triumph and recovery and hope. I liked her as a person and I admired her determination to overcome her illness. I also admire this book for giving Sierra an addiction where there is still stigma. I can't help but cringe at reviews which complain about having a main romance character with an addiction -- as if such people are not deserving of a happy ending. I enjoyed flawed characters making their journey through the world. This book is serious, but not dark.I great deal of the lightness in this book surrounds Connie who is a gentle, giving soul. He is an uncomplicated man in that he just wants a happy ending and a family. Of course, Sierra upends those dreams but he is a good contrast to her and a great support. (Plus who can resist a sexy firefighter?)WORTH MENTIONING: This book takes a serious look at addiction and recovery.CONNECTED BOOKS: ANY DAY NOW is the second book in the Sullivan's Crossing series. While there are overlapping characters, this book reads as a complete standalone.STAR RATING: I give this book 4 stars.

My 4-year old nephew loves this story, so I bought him this version for his 4th birthday. We have two other versions (a really creepy old one and a newer, confusing-to-read one). This one is great; He wanted me to read it immediately! The illustrations are fabulous, engaging, and creative. I am a teacher, so I really appreciate that the visuals promoted engaged reading and discussion of the text. I also love that this book mostly maintains the classic story (the ending is altered) while adding innovative illustrations that add so much to the story. This is my new favorite version. It is adorable!One last note...In the back, they have included some tips on how to make this a more educational experience for kids. It is a good place to start if you aim to engage your kids a bit more.

My dad used to sing me this song as a child. I wanted a book to pass along to my kids that had similar words - and this is almost exactly it, except with a nicer ending. All of my kids love it!

Some of the lyrics have been changed to make the book "safe", including ruining the punchline! Instead of " I know an old lady who swallowed a horse... She's dead, of course," it ends, "she's full, of course!"

Got this and all the other sing-along books I could find because my toddler loves to sing them. Worth it for the variety and to be able to sing something other than Miss Mary Mack 20 times a day.

The ending has been sterilized slightly, but it still is a great and funny song with hilarious illustrations.

This was one of my favourite books as a child and have loved reading it to my daughter I highly recommend

One of my daughter's favorite books as a young child. So much fun to read! I buy this book for every baby born among my family and friends. And my cousin's one year-old seems to think it tastes as good as it reads.

However my almost 2 year old is now TERRIFIED of flies. So that is not good. We hid the book and will try again in 6 months.

I would give this 3.5 stars if I could, because it's not quite 4 but better than 3. Some of the exercises and communication styles seem a little awkward and "overly polite" for true intimacy, but maybe that's why I need these skills in the first place? I'm a little less feminine than the average woman.

This book is incredibly eye opening. I've read so many relationship and communication books, yet this is my go to and is so perfectly written and put together. I've finally learned what I've been searching for

This is THE workbook for people who may even know how to communicate, just not with each other. Perfect for all walks of life, and it will absolutely change your relationship!My fiance and I would not be engaged, if it weren't for this book. We were happy, but just couldn't communicate well with each other. This book highlighted some key things we were and weren't doing.

Recommended for use by our marriage counselor and we try to use the word tracks to each other and do exercises together. Definitely brought us closer, especially feeling silly reading the examples. Totally recommend to others!

Should be required reading for all High School kids. It's that good

If you really need to work on communication this is a good book, but feel like a lot of the advice is self explanatory. But I did like the parts about using the correct words to describe a need or want. Just changing verbage has been helpful and feels less defensive
