Written by a psychiatrist and neuroscientist who has also authored a book on attention deficit disorder, Change Your Brain contains dozens of brain scans of patients with various neurological problems, from caffeine, nicotine, and heroin addiction to manic-depression to epilepsy. These scans, often showing large gaps in neurological activity or areas of extreme overactivity, are downright frightening to look at, and Dr. Amen should know better than to resort to such scare tactics. He explains how the brain works, what happens when things go wrong, and how to optimize brain function. Five sections of the brain are discussed, and case studies clearly illustrate possible problems. The accompanying brain-scan photos are difficult to read with an untrained eye. Although Amen provides step-by-step "prescriptions" geared toward optimizing and healing the different sections of the brain ("create a library of wonderful experiences"; "try meditation/self-hypnosis"), 80 percent of the patients in his case studies were given medication to treat their behavioral problems. The audience for this book is ambiguous. While it encourages readers to evaluate themselves and others, it would be more useful to a professional in the social sciences than to the general reader. I agree with the negative reviews that this book is more or less a 17-hour infomercial but it does have helpful tips or suggestions mixed in occasionally, and some of them are real gems which is why I still liked this book overall.This book would be so much better if it focused purely on the science and what behaviors can be modified with actionable tasks/steps people can take (i.e. changing the questions they ask themselves, writing goals on paper, joining support groups)The authors concept is this: Spend thousands getting your brain scanned, then spend hundreds on supplements he sells for your special kind of brain, and join a church.That last part is true and helpful--not necessarily joining a church but forming bonds and strengthening human connection. Have a support system.Of course changing your diet will help too, as most of his supplements work largely because of the forced dietary change.

If you purchase this book you will be hounded with emails to buy his overpriced brain vitamins. The entire book is about making your brain better by using his overpriced supplements, nothing more. Many pictures of brain scans and how he cures people through his supplements but nothing on how to make your life better on your own. Very boring and hard read. I cannot grasp all the positive reviews. He shows brain scan pictures and how after taking his vitamins the scan looks better then says if you cant afford a brain scan go to my website and take the two minute survey and it will tell you what combination of his vitamins to purchase and take. A TWO MINUTE SURVEY IS AS GOOD AS A BRAIN SCAN FOR A DIAGNOSIS? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Not to mention it advised me to take vitamins well over a hundred bucks a month. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.

I have to admit that I was disappointed, I am surprised there were so many positive reviews!I enjoyed the science and review of brain neurophysiology in the book and the prospect of actually mapping progression/regression in brain health by taking a WebNeuro test as an alternative to the expensive SPECT scan. The book referenced Dr. Amen's "multiple" websites in which you can purchase the on-line WebNeuro test (important to know which program to follow based on the 'type' of brain you have), purchase the results and recommended program of the 'free' on-online ADD test, purchase his on-line training program, and purchase the very expensive (reportedly "very important") and multiple supplements! There is a free personalized report sent by Dr. Amen is based on an on-line test that depicts which one of the 16 brain types you are, which is not even discussed in this book! The self-help available in the book (and on the free on-line report) is not new...mental exercises (I do like Suduko!), positive thinking, meditation, clean eating, and exercise.

Reading this book felt like panning for gold during the gold rush. I would like to preface that I am not a psychology expert, but I am a psychology nerd and I enjoyed this book.I was immediately hooked by Daniel Amen’s life-changing proclaimations about his SPECT research, however I soon came to realize he’d refer me back to his other online material that required more monetary investment. Like what many other readers have mentioned, Dr. Amen heavily advertises his other resources throughout his book. Being the curious person that I am, I looked up how much a scan would cost ($3,500 and their clinic does not accept insurance). Fighting back the urge to get a scan, you can still utilize this book. I think the book offers various nuggets of knowledge, but you have to look for it in the river of text. I gained great understanding of the brain—prefrontal cortex, limbic system, basal ganglia, anterior cingulate cortex, temporal lobe—and how deficiencies in these areas may affect your brain. He also suggests remedies to these issues in an organized and concise method plan that Dr. Amen created. He offers both medicinal and natural ways to aid under or over performing areas in the brain, which I find extremely helpful since I believe in a more holistic approach.I’d say 20% of the book is comprised of educational content, 50% of patient testimonies/stories, 25% SPECT imaging explainations and the last 5% to self glorification.

Excellent resource! Very practical and inspirational information. And for the people who say that this is a giant infomercial, they're missing the gist of it. The idea is that there are things you can do to improve your life. You can start now. You could improve your sleep, and start to exercise. You can put better foods into your body. You can improve your moods. Taking better care of yourself will improve your relationships. The idea behind the book is that you can take control of your neurological health, improve current conditions, and prevent future neurological issues. There is science to back this up. In doing so, you'll likely improve your health, your longevity, the quality of your life. You don't have to buy Dr. A's supplements. Fish oil and phosphotidyl choline and B vitamins and such are all available from a variety of sources. I have used this book with a young client. He's very bright. As he enters middle school, he has gobbled up this book like you wouldn't believe! This book is empowering him to make smarter choices about what he eats, how he engages with others, what he does when he has negative thoughts. I appreciate that there are resources like this to empower not only adults, but also young people. People need to know that they can make lasting and significant changes to their health! There is such a push for pharmaceutical remedies. But your health is in ***your own hands.*** This book has the science, experience, and research to prove it. Thank you, Dr. Amen and colleagues!

From possession to oppression to the devil's role in addiction, there are riveting questions for Christians to consider. This book provides answers in a consistent, Lutheran, and Christocentric way.Curious about voodoo culture, but want a perspective a bit deeper than a tourists? It's in there. What about Native American ancestor rituals? Generational curses? Psychic Expos? General American spiritualism and the spiritual effects of multi-culturalism? This book will give you things to think about.I'll admit. A few times I paused in hesitation as I was reading. I wondered whether the author was going too far or would somehow jump off the deep end. I'm happy to report that he is not encouraging superstition or jumping to conclusions. He does not see the devil behind every rough day or nasty look. At the same time, the devil can be in the details of the temptations floating around us. That doesn't really surprise us, does it? Still, perhaps it happens more often then we would like to admit.There really is spiritual warfare in America. If you believe that, as well as the power of God's Word, then this book offers a well-written (very readable) introduction. It offers a very Lutheran approach, focusing on God's promises, God's Son, and God's means of grace, and there are helpful quotes from Scripture, hymnody, the Confessions, and Large Catechism.A few parts are repetitive. I appreciated it, however, thinking that I should include this in a homeschool religion class when my kids are in high school.I also appreciated how the author demonstrated, again and again, how exorcism, or exorcistic practices, exists through Scripture, hymnody, and church practices. To put it another way, this was instructive about more than spooky things: there are positive benefits to learn about the gifts God has already given to us, even if suffering—even intense suffering—continues to be experienced in this world.It is nicely and widely applicable to a surprising extent. I loaned it out the same day I finished reading it! I recommend it.

As a Lutheran and a person who has had many paranormal experiences, I was very happy to see this book. How often Christians dealing with the demonic are only given the option of the Roman Ritual, which itself relies on certain things that can be viewed as idolatrous, i.e. holy water. Pastor Bennett brings a Christian common sense approach, built on the assurances of Scripture. I only wish he'd included more examples of the various types of spiritual warfare we encounter. I had never heard that a house blessing is in fact an exorcism; that was new to me. There are far too many pastors that are either unfamiliar or uncomfortable with the subject and I would encourage them to read the book. I would actually go even further and recommend that it be required reading for seminarians. I would enjoy an author to author discussion with Pastor Bennett.

For any under-shepherd tending the Lord's sheep, this book will open your eyes to an often overlooked aspect of spiritual care. All to often we forget that Satan is a ravenous lion seeking souls to devour, and those souls belong to God's children (for the devil already counts any and all lost souls as his). Even if it's not understood, let alone realised, this book will help you more fully understand the spiritual warfare Christians face and how faithful servants of the Lord can aid and assist them in their struggles.

This wonderful book's only downfall is that it is such an interesting read that I read it in one sitting. In his book, Bennett shows us why we need to fear the Old Evil Foe, and more importantly, shows us what Christ has done to redeem us from the Foe. In these pages, one gains a proper understanding of the feebleness of the Christian souk, and the strength of the Good Shepherd who protects us from he who madly seeks our overthrow. This work ought to be regarded as a must-read for Christian Catechesis.

Very impressed to read views about spiritual warfare by a Missouri Synod Lutheran pastor. Though I don't believe baptism "saves" us, I do know that the name of the Lord Jesus is powerful. Even more powerful in dispelling demon possession or attachments is for a person to become a believer and follower of Jesus Christ. In that way, they have the Holy Spirit living within them -- and "greater is He that is in us that he that is in the world" (1 John 4:4). Still, for a mainline Protestant church leader to finally realize that we are in a spiritual battle which is REAL and not just symbolically is AWESOME! I highly recommend reading this author's books -- especially if you are in a mainline denominational Christian protestant church.

I couldn't put this book down. I finished it in a matter of days, instead of the weeks or months it usually takes me for a theological book.

Well written and contains a lot of examples and illustrations, worth reading.

Every one need to read this book. Highly recommended.

This story was so moving. The message was lost on younger students (PreK, K, 1st), but the ones who were a little older or more mature really understood the message that you don't have to be perfect or do everything perfectly to somehow make all the right pieces end up in just the right spot. It was uplifting to remember that it's okay to let things go sometimes, and the world will continue to support you somehow.

The Most Magnificent Thing is picture book worth reading time and again with our children even for us adults when we lose perspective. It sends the perfect message to the reader about not giving up and looking at the problem from a different point of view. Just set back and recharge before tackling a difficult problem that is stuck.I was pulled into the book with the cover and blurb and immediately requested it. The book is not just a story about making something but learning as well. The girl tries to invent something, tinkering and planning as she goes about her task. Learning and play along with reading make a delightful trio in this book, The Most Magnificent Thing.It is a simple story that can be a good guiding and motivating book for small children. I sat and read it to my son and we read it twice and talked about the pictures and all the little changes and activities the little girl was doing. Her cute, silly dog made the story funny and endearing. The furry assistant sure made a lot of things easy. Only now, my son is asking for his own assistant so he too can build ‘magnificent things’.The illustrations are spot on making it a delight for the younger kids to read as well. The pictures of the ‘magnificent thing’ they are making and its different version was a fun clue to figure out. We played the game together to try to find the exact thing they were making.The Most Magnificent Thing has excellent narration and language and teaches a child and adults about creativity, challenges, and not giving up. Often we are told to ‘take a break’ or ‘see things from a different perspective this book shares all this wisdom in a simple and rather cute manner.A fresh, funny book full of wisdom. A perfect pick for an ideal gift book as well.(I requested this book from KidsCanPress via NetGalley review is my own.)

I'm happy with the Most Magnificent Thing. I bought the book for my 2yo daughter who loves to read. My daughter is becoming more aware of building, her imagination and her emotions. I think this story illustrates all these things so well. My only critique is that I went with hardcover vs board book because my daughter does so well with not destroying books, most of the time. However, the hardcover is a large square book. I think a board book would suite her toddler fingers better for toting the book around the house. Overall, a good buy.

One of my favorite Thomas Edison quotes is "When you have exhausted all possibilities, remember this -- you haven't." He could have been speaking of this little girl.Child-friendly language and charming illustrations are a perfect combination in this story of hope, perseverance, and hard work as a little girl endeavors to create the most magnificent thing. She fails more than once, even becoming so frustrated that she gives up. But determination wins the day when she takes a look at all her "failures" and discovers each has an element that is just right.

This is one of my most favorite picture books - a story about perseverance and keeping a cool head. I have read it to my own kids over and over again and I bring a copy as a gift to every baby shower I attend! My kids especially love that the dog pees on the failed project - it's not highlighted in the book (this is not a potty humor kind of book), but they noticed it in the picture and giggle every time. :)

I really enjoyed this book, both the writing and the illustrations. The author totally nailed the frustrations of being a perfectionist. As I read, I hoped for that moment when we fall into a puddle of tears, convinced we just. can't do. it. It is always from there that Glory comes calling! The author did not disappoint! The illustrations are delightfully whimsical and successfully work together with the text. I highly recommend this book via Kindle or print.

This is one of my favorite read-aloud books to read to 2nd graders! I love how the journey the main character goes on trying to create the perfect thing she visualizes, and how she realizes all her mistakes along the way were something others were looking for. This is a great book to read to kids about mistakes!

I'm surprised that my 2 year old likes this book so much. It has a fair amount of words for that age so I just adapt it to his attention span at the moment, but he loves the "crunch"-explode page. I'm sure he knows just what she's feeling! I love the message and find myself thinking "it wasn't her finest moment" before i explode myself! Love this book.

The Group Theatre, modeled off of the equally influencial Moscow Art Theatre, was an artistic organization that completely and drastically revolutionized not only American Theatre, but World Theatre as well.Formed in the 1930's and comprised of what has become a literal who's who of Theatre: Clifford Odets, Elia Kazan, Harold Clurman, Robert Lewis, Stella Adler, Lee Strasberg, Cheryl Crawford, John Garfield, Sanford Meisner and many others, The Group Theatre sought to create a vibrant and organic native theatre that sought to not only mirror the times but also instigate radical social change.At no other time in American history has an artistic group been comprised of so many talented individuals focused on one aesthetic and political goal. Despite one's political leanings (make no mistake, The Group Theatre were extreme leftest liberals), The Fervent Years provides and endless and bountiful amount of inspiration and stimulation for any theatre artist.Clurman writes in a fine dramatic style that boils with passion, wit and insight. The Fervent Years is required reading for all devotees of The Theatre. But don't let that scare you, it is a most entertaining read at the same time.

This book is a beautiful account of the struggles and events surrounding Harold Clurman during his time with the Group Theater. Harold starts off by revealing how his life brought him to establish the Group along with Lee Strasberg and Cheryl Crawford. It then continues and describes the significant struggles and events encountered by the Group and its members along with some beautiful and extremely important observations Harold made, not only regarding the theater community and its participants, but also about our society in general and its effect on art in general.This book is an absolute must for any serious actor or director. For that matter, anyone serious about life would gain from reading this book. The Group Theater was a wonderful "experiment" fostered by some very passionate people who not only helped to shape theater in America, but they also played a significant role in laying the groundwork from which some of the best acting and directing has emerged as seen in films and theater since that time.I won't give anything away for the sake of would-be readers, but generally speaking, one of the great things I took away from this book relates to a character arc that he, Harold Clurman, went through in relation to experiences he had early on where he did not yet fully understand why some negative theater reviews upset him. Over time, he elucidates how he came to understand his emotions had intellectual justification. It's great, because you see a man with enough wisdom to observe his emotions of being upset, yet he gives himself time to understand the logical meaning of those same emotions, justified or not. It's almost as if he's willing to give himself time to check his own reality. The side irony (or perhaps not so ironic) is that I observed a connection between what he eventually realizes in that one aspect of his life when compared to greater troubles of that era. This is all only one nugget of the book, but it was the most meaningful to me.

“In the books I read, in the painting I see, in the music I hear, in all conversations, I am aware of the presence of the world itself, I detect a feeling for large issues of human concern. In the theatre these are either absent or diluted, frequently cheapened. Where is the best thought of our time in the theatre, the feeling of some personal significance in any of its works? Either there is something inferior in the theatre per se or there is something wrong about the practical theatre of today that escapes me. I can’t live without the theatre, but I can’t live with it. The theatre gives itself lofty graces, claims a noble lineage, but has no more dimension than a bordello!”That’s Harold Clurman in the 1920’s and it’s what he and The Group Theatre sought to change. They were not alone, others sought the same, all failed as often as they succeeded, but their failures just as much as their successes laid the foundation for the theatre of today.

A great book about a proud period in American culture.

This book is one of the single most inspiring pieces of writing I have ever read. For actors, directors, designers, technicians, and playgoers, as well as historians, this book is a must-read.In Clurman's wonderfully bombastic style, this is the first person account of one of the most exciting theatrical movements *ever*. It tells of the Group Theater, a movement which brought Stanislavsky's theories to American acting, and gave rise to the careers of playwright Clifford Odets & future filmmaker Elia Kazan, among others.The story is amazing, truly inspirational, for those of us who love theater. About halfway through the text, I stopped being mildly irritated by Clurman's egomanical asides and started loving them. They give character to what might be rather dry history.Besides, the man helped to shape the American aesthetic. I think we might give him a little leeway...I finished this book feeling inspired by people who want to make their lives into art. It's a very personal story, and the real love affair in the book is between Clurman and the theater. And it's a gorgeous love story indeed.(Additionally, this text is a great peek into the spirit that moved the 1930's. Really interesting from a cultural historian's perspective, I'm sure.)
