From the Back Cover

Systems Thinking, Systems Practice "Whether by design, accident or merely synchronicity, Checkland appears to have developed a habit of writing seminal publications near the start of each decade which establish the basis and framework for systems methodology research for that decade." Hamish Rennie, Journal of the Operational Research Society, 1992 Thirty years ago Peter Checkland set out to test whether the Systems Engineering (SE) approach, highly successful in technical problems, could be used by managers coping with the unfolding complexities of organizational life. The straightforward transfer of SE to the broader situations of management was not possible, but by insisting on a combination of systems thinking strongly linked to real-world practice Checkland and his collaborators developed an alternative approach - Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) - which enables managers of all kinds and at any level to deal with the subtleties and confusions of the situations they face. This work established the now accepted distinction between 'hard' systems thinking, in which parts of the world are taken to be 'systems' which can be 'engineered', and 'soft' systems thinking in which the focus is on making sure the process of inquiry into real-world complexity is itself a system for learning. Systems Thinking, Systems Practice (1981) and Soft Systems Methodology in Action (1990) together with an earlier paper Towards a Systems-based Methodology for Real-World Problem Solving (1972) have long been recognized as classics in the field. Now Peter Checkland has looked back over the three decades of SSM development, brought the account of it up to date, and reflected on the whole evolutionary process which has produced a mature SSM. SSM: A 30-Year Retrospective, here included with Systems Thinking, Systems Practice closes a chapter on what is undoubtedly the most significant single research programme on the use of systems ideas in problem solving. Now retired from full-time university work, Peter Checkland continues his research as a Leverhulme Emeritus Fellow.

Basically, the soft systems methodology (SSM) can in effect facilitate the incremental re-engineering of human activity systems without an explicit reverse engineering phase. Such systems are called soft because they present persistently ill-formed problem situations, largely due to their inherent complexity and contingent behavior. These attributes are typically characterized by the lack of consistently repeatable behaviors/outcomes. In particular, they exhibit nondeterminism (due to variabilities of various human agents and their institutions) as well as nonstationarity (per sporadic changes in their makeups and circumstances). Such dynamism of agendas and situations, moreover, serves to vastly complicate the static complexity of human organizations and society. In consequence, their inherent intractability results in the futility of positivist schemes for analyzing or improving them. Accordingly, the SSM or similar approaches are vital in effectively exploring such systems, as well as in incrementally improving them.Checkland and his associates originally attempted to apply typical systems engineering methods in dealing with human activity systems, but soon recognized their unsuitability for dealing with the ill-formed problem situations as endemic to human activities. Similarly, they found general systems theory had nothing of value to offer. They then gravitated to the inquiry system concept espoused by Singer/Churchman as a means of systematically investigating and improving human activities, which the SSM characterizes in its Real World Domain. Complementary systems thinking is performed in a corresponding SSM Systems Thinking Domain. These two SSM partitions together constitute the inquiry system, which can be traversed iteratively to serve as a learning system regarding a target human activity system. The SSM focuses and prompts the learning process, which enables incremental improvements in the targeted system. Conceptually, the SSM is composed of the following seven elements:1. Perceiving - the Problem Situation2. Formulating - the Focal Issues Perspective3. Composing - the Root Definition (of the selected system aspects)4. Predicating - the Conceptual Models5. Comparing - Conceptual Models with the Focal Issues Perspective6. Deciding - Desirable/Feasible Changes7. Activating - Changes to Problem Situation.Elements 3 and 4 reside in the Systems Thinking Domain, and are referred to as Mode 2 or interpretive steps of the SSM. The other elements occur in the Real World Domain, and they are termed Mode 1 or intervention steps. The iterative looping through all seven steps realizes a Singerian inquiry system, which is intended to yield an increasingly accurate characterization of the human activity system’s problem situation. A defined template for the root definition in Element 3 serves as the basis for the conceptual models. They are composed in Element 4 of (nebulous) ideal types of generic elements, as tailored for human activity systems in general. Next, the SSM process tends to ameliorate selected undesirable aspects of the problem situation. Here, judgments regarding the comparative discrepancies between actual and ideal system attributes rely on the use of an adaptation of Vickers’ appreciative system in Element 5, as do decisions regarding remedial options in Element 6. Promising system changes are then introduced in Element 7.In the book’s systems thinking portion (approximately the first 40 per cent), I found the content to be a quite interesting and palatable background survey. However, there seems to be no incisive definition of systems thinking, one that is precise, coherent, and declarative. Various examples and fragmentary rationale do not suffice, especially in view of its broad range of interpretations and applications appearing in the literature at large. Consequently, my impression of systems thinking is that of a catch-all collection of disparate notions and techniques compiled via breadthwise importation of assets of plausible or speculative worth. Systems thinking thus seems to be a sketchy high-level concept whose inherent vagueness and ambiguity can sometimes be exploited opportunistically. In particular, a systems practitioner can morph it into whatever configuration that incident circumstances may suggest. Alas, I remain quite unclear as to what in essence constitutes systems thinking per se; other authors, moreover, reinforce my perplexity. In the systems practice portion of the book, my view of SSM is largely favorable. For example, SSM could support the conjoined exploration of related problem and solution spaces. In general, moreover, I believe that the SSM architecture has considerable promise for such use in engineered physical systems, especially software-based ones. (In my experience, such systems invariably manifest some aspects of soft systems.) An SSM-type approach might for example be valuable when investigating upgrades to an existing engineered system that is poorly structured or documented. Alternatively, the SSM inquiry capability might be used when an existing system is possibly going to be used for different functions, or in different environments. Of course, it would seem that the SSM’s utility for soft systems is beyond dispute, with only a few reservations. Although they would all seem tractable to resolution, my main concerns are:1. the modest scale/depth and large number of problem situations addressed, given the limited time and staffing applied, can hardly suffice to demonstrate ample conclusiveness2. no treatment of certain major concerns for ill-structured human activity systems is presented: nondeterminism, nonstationarity, indefinite boundaries, change side effects, for example3. the utilization of Vickers’ appreciative system concept seems glib and oblique4. by definition holons are elements in a particular form of level structure called a holarchy; an activity level, however, is erroneously conflated with activity flow in SSM.In his thirty-year retrospective, Checkland makes two comments that I found disconcerting. First, he says that the above seven-step SSM process has been simplified to four steps. The seven-step version is already sketchy enough, and it seems that SSM is now devolving to the status of lore. Then, he notes that the handmade diagrams, as contrasted with ones that might be constructed and supported with a drawing tool, are preferable in conveying the provisional stage of their formulation. For many reasons, these handmade drawings would definitely be an impediment to the practical full-scale use of SSM, for clients and systems practitioners alike.Aside from my reservations about the lack of closure of systems thinking coverage in this book, I consider the SSM concept to be quite intriguing and promising overall. Disconcertingly though, there appear to be surprisingly few follow-up publications in recent years that extend of further elaborate SSM. This might in part be attributable to the (apparent) lack of an integrated SSM environment. In any case, SSM would seem to merit further implementation development, especially in that at present it appears to essentially be just an architecture of a methodology, albeit one usable for manual application. Despite the definite appeal of the SSM concept, however, my appreciative system scores the book at only Four Stars.

What is really going on here? If we look solely at the 'problem' we may miss the true picture. Soft Systems thinking, at its core, asks us to see anew, to identify and understand the many variables affecting a situation, process, or operation including our biases and assumptions. In part, this book was written to clearly distinguish hard from soft systems thinking. The original seven stages of soft systems thinking included 1.Entering the problem situation; 2. Expressing the problem situation; 3.Formulating root definitions of relevant systems; 4.Building Conceptual Models of Human Activity Systems; 5.Comparing the models with the real world; 6.Defining changes that are desirable and feasible; and 7.Taking action to improve the real world situation.; and Rather than a linear process, soft systems thinking is an iterative, dialogical process. In the retrospective included in this version - the four activities included: 1) finding out about a problem situation; 2) formulating relevant purposeful activity models; 3) debating the situation seeking both changes that would improve the situation and the accommodations between conflicting interests; and 4) taking action (p. A15).This book is worth its weight for the 30 year retrospective on systems thinking - a wonderful historical summary! An excellent bibliography on systems thinking is also provided!

Useful for my work

This book was recommended by a friend with Systems Engineering expertise, and has become one of my favorite books on the subject.A good balance of humor and serious dialog is maintained.Complete, crisp, and clean descriptions of the many approaches to Systems Theory are discussed and well delineated. An excellent book for all ranges of background and purposes, I highly recommend it as a beginning point or a refresher course.

I had been reading his work for 25 years, this is an exceelent update after all the years. To be recommended to all!

Wordy...unclear...I have to read & organize too much in order to make use of the valuable content.

Manga Classics: Jane Eyre

From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up—Brontë's novel has been reimagined many times over the years, and this iteration is a welcome addition. Jane Eyre is a plain but spirited girl who spends much of her life feeling like an outsider. She becomes a governess and falls in love with her brooding and mysterious employer, Mr. Rochester. Readers assuming that a manga treatment of this classic book would be light and fluffy will be pleased to learn that this is a very faithful adaptation. At more than 300 pages long, it includes larger and smaller plot points from the original novel, many of which will surprise readers who are more familiar with the Orson Welles film version. The manga format makes the story more accessible and reader-friendly. For instance, in the source material, several characters speak French. But in this adaptation, whenever characters are speaking French, their words are written in English but in double-lined word balloons. Brontë's original text is used throughout, but the language is also condensed and simplified. The illustrations also help with this process, showing with actions or expressions what might have taken paragraphs to express. The artwork brings the drama of this story to life and will help younger teens engage more with this classic. VERDICT An effective adaptation that will appeal to manga devotees as well as fans of timeless romances.—Andrea Lipinski, New York Public Library

This book was purchased for my grandaughter who is not much of a reader. She sits down with each new Manga bvook and goes thru cover to cover. Based on that it is a great investment.

This was a gift. The recipient loves it! True to the story line.

This was a Valentine's gift for my fiancée, who is the world's biggest Jane Eyre fangirl. She loves it! I had a chance to flip through the pages before giving it to her. The character designs are great and, according to my fiancée, the dialogue is true to the original story. Highly recommended to any fans of Charlotte Brontë!

Got this for my friend as an inside joke, but I actually almost kept it for myself because it's very true to the original novel and the artwork is really good.

It is very close to the bookI love how they adapted the story, and the drawing is beautiful!

As an English language learner, I've been struggling for reading and understanding English novels in particular classics written old-fashioned style.I wish this manga series would help me for comprehending these matters considerably.

Bought this for my niece to get her interested in reading classics. She LOVED it. It’s so nice to be able to talk to her about the stories and know this will help her with overall reading. She is 11.

I like the manga. Really captures a side of Mr. Rochester we rarely see in the book.

I am not sure why this book is so popular and in use in undergraduate optics courses. Treatment is sometimes difficult to follow and frankly I can't put my finger on the reason. I guess the author is just too verbose for my tastes. The best part of this book is in the first chapter when he gives a nice history of optics.I DO however recommend his Schaum's outline Schaum's Outline of Optics which is very useful to give you practice. I prefer Fowles book Introduction to Modern Optics (Dover Books on Physics) which is at the same level although there are fewer algebra steps shown.Actually, I'd personally recommend Guenther's book Modern Optics instead of this one if you really wanted a modern dive into an old subject.

Great standalone text. Updated and relevant. I bought this for a graduate level introductory optics course despite already having the 4th edition from an undergraduate course. I struggled with the necessity of buying the new edition at first but have no regrets now. The 4th edition had hardly any example problems throughout the entire text. The author remedied this in the 5th edition. There are multiple example problems that are well discussed in each chapter on the main topics. Also, the text was reorganized a bit and of course the page numbers and homework problems are a little different than the 4th edition. When the teacher references a certain page during class or says work homework problem X, the last thing I want to do is look around and try to figure out if I am looking at the right thing.

The book is very descriptive but the style of writing isn't super easy to follow or engaging. However, what makes the book really good, in my opinion, are the figures and diagrams provided every couple of pages which are great for visual learners like me. Also, this book is packed with information and covers more than one optics class could teach. The book is not something you can casually peruse; you have to sit down and really focus to fully understand it. However, it covers practically everything you need to know on electromagnetic waves for a senior physics student. It's also worth keeping after graduating since it makes a really good reference tool.

This book has a lot of information and is generally pretty decent. However it also has a lot of fluff that isn't necessary. The derivations are nice but a lot of steps are skipped and it feels like there could be more explanation of what they're doing. The pages aren't printed correctly so there are little grey boxes (supposedly to mark equations?) in the middle of paragraphs of text. Not that great at explaining what is going on either. Could be my optics class is just poorly taught as well, I usually just use the book to pull equations out of after getting tired of reading it. So far I'm about 2/3 of the way through the book and already knew a lot of the material in geometrical optics and a few other things, and this book just managed to confuse me. I knew what was going on and the book just does not explain it well at all.

I'm a physical chemical student who works closely with optics, recently found myself lacking some knowledge in optics, so I purchased this book followed by a post-doc's advice. The content is clear and precise, easy to understand, a nice and worthy book for a junior non-physical majored scholar.

The book is alright. Most of the info that you want to know for intro optics is in this book (4/5 for that part), but the presentation is pretty poorly executed (2/5, in my opinion). This book is just way too verbose, and not in a good way. The extra paragraphs don't really contribute much to the understanding of the underlying physics. The book can probably be cut in size by a large amount. There are so many paragraphs that can be removed without loss of continuity of the actual physics going on.What I mean is, Hecht gets side tracked too much. It's like this: I start talking about the double-slit experiment. Then I remember guy A did something on it, so start talking about the brief history about that. Then I remember that guy A wrote a letter on the material. So I talk about that letter and insert an excerpt from it. Then I also insert a letter from guy A to guy B in the field. So let's talk about that, too. (I'm over exaggerating a bit, but that's how it feels when you read read this book.)All the people that I talked to in my optics class thought the same thing. For a reader who just wants the physics and not the trivia and numerous paragraphs on really, really minor details, this book is a displeasure to read. I think the book is a course textbook + encyclopedia hybrid. It is not as concise as a well-written course textbook, but also not as detailed as as full-blown encyclopedia. It is neither here nor there.I feel like the book is written for the stereotypical whiny student who, when sitting in the class goes, "But teacher, why do I need to learn this? This is so pointless. When will I ever even use this in real life?" So Hecht inserts many examples to convince you that "See, this physics is actually used in real life!" Examples are good, but when you throw in too many examples you increase the length of the chapters without adding much foundational understanding of the physics.Use the book to get the essential physics that is sprinkled in the chapters, but learn how to skip the parts that are random facts and the book will work fine.

First let me start off by saying I am not Wiccan, though I am a magickal practitioner. I only mention it because the author is wiccan yet I still eat up her knowledge gratefully. I have several of her books (all ebooks) and have learned so much from them. I prefer what I call my"books of knowledge" to be in paper form because I highlight the crap out of everything I have a use for, so when I go back and reread, I can skip any jargon that's not needed, however any time this author has a sale on an ebook I am notified via email so consequently all the books I have of hers are ebook. This is not a problem for me. I buy a new composition book for each ebook and as I work my way through, it goes down in the comp book. Easy.I have several books that give their version of color correspondence as well as this one. I only use what resonates with ME no matter where it comes from. I like this book in particular because she explains the color in detail. What it means, how to use it, Chakra correlation if any, astrological associations etc. She is very thorough. After each color she adds in great detail 3 - 4 magickal workings from bath, kitchen witchery, divination,$$ and so much more. There are quite a few spells given considering how many colors she covers. She also gives explanations and examples which I find extremely helpful. She doesn't just say "do this" she will say "do this, and here's why and here's an example of you can do it" Even if you believe you have your candle color correlations locked down tight I would still recommend this book to you. I used the info in this book to enhance my already tried and true color meanings to great success and I learned new things as well.

I have many books by Lisa and all of them make my Wicca practice so simple, so pleasurable and joyful. As a beginner in this craft, her book gives me a lot to start in a simple way! Today I purchased this book and I already scrolled down seeing beautiful rituals I so want to incorporate into my routines. I love candles and colors magick! Thank you, Lisa, so much!!!

They keep the book simple and easy to read. Great for someone starting out but have a little of knowledge of how this thing works. At the end of the day, it’s all about strengthening your mind lies where things manifest minus the tools.

This book will be a quick read but also a wonderful addition to my reference library. 157 pages and very easy to read and follow spells. Thank you, Lisa

Love this book. It's an excellent accompaniment to my beginners candle sells.

Sorta complicated as to all the additional things to purchase and not really clear

Love the book and I normally work with white candles or if it is a certain spell /sabbat. The only thing I wish you had written more about is Ceromancy. That's something I'm interested in but I can find ANY books here or in Amazon on the subject, so if anyone knows any books please let me know. Thanks and Blessed Be.

It tells you about each candle, and each candle has a spell for it. That's pretty much it to the book.

Review

“Nettel’s sharp, potent novel depicts how even the briefest relationship can affect the rest of a life.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review“A compassionately written portrait of urban loneliness and the human impulse to belong.” —Kirkus“In After the Winter, Nettel has fashioned a powerful and luminous novel, one that portrays absence, presence and human imperfection with a unique and penetrating voice.” —Ploughshares “Nettel brilliantly conveys the way things can go wrong at the beginning of a relationship and how those disasters can push us in unexpected directions.” —Words Without Borders“Previous relationships haunt the characters’ interior monologues, and woven into Nettel’s confident, empathic lines is the sad certainty that the author has explored in her other works: that life, let alone love, is fleeting.” —The Atlantic“Nettel’s mission is deeply personal and recognizably urgent.” —Los Angeles Review of Books“In capturing the voices, travails, and eventual connection of two lonelyhearts, Guadalupe Nettel’s After the Winter captures the spirit of urban loneliness so vividly that it’s often painful to read.” —The Quarterly Conversation“Utterly brilliant.” —Bookriot“After the Winter asks big questions about intimacy and desire, happiness and depression, passion and numbness, and, of course, love and loss.” —Southwest Review“In a tale of intertwining fates and the threads of interiority that connect the most disparate souls, Mexico City–based Guadalupe Nettel perfectly explicates the loneliness of expatriation as well as the gravity of a momentary meeting when one longs for love.” —World Literature Today“[W]hat most connects [the characters] here in After the Winter, what Nettel understands with such sensitivity, are the contradictory desires we have to both live alone in our apartments, our self-made mausoleums, and to escape them, to leave them behind and seek out human connection.” —Arkansas International“Nettel transfixes with this insightful and painfully poignant novel, which examines the bonds between people, the degrees of intimacy and commitment we allow ourselves and the toll isolation can take upon the soul.” —Glasgow Herald“Guadalupe Nettel is a brilliant anatomist of love and perversity, and each new book is a revelation.” —Katie Kitamura“Guadalupe Nettel’s After the Winter is a dazzling excavation of the glimmering particularities of consciousness, and how a collision of fates can transform our inner worlds. This taut, atmospheric novel is an ode to the complicated heartbreak of loving what will forever be just out of reach.” —Laura van den Berg“Guadalupe Nettel is a luminous writer of dark humor and wild insight. After the Winter is a deeply compassionate story about love, about how hard it is to know another—let alone ourselves—in all our strange glory. Yet, in the end, it is also a story about how essential it is, in spite of the pitfalls, to try.” —Nick Flynn“Beautiful, melancholic and universal . . .” —Brazos BookstorePraise for Guadalupe Nettel:“One of the fascinating qualities of this book is the unsparing testimony, somewhere between religious confession and secular disclosure, that gives a sharp sense of a woman’s harrowing girlhood. . . . Nettel’s strategy yields rich rewards.” —New York Times“A remarkable exploration into sight and the perceptions of childhood.” —Bookforum“Nettel’s eye lightly deforms things and gives rise to a tension, subtle but persistent, that immerses us in an uncomfortable reality, disquieting, even disturbing—a gaze that illuminates her prose like an alien sun shining down on our world.” —Valeria Luiselli“Nettel’s stories are as atmospheric and emotionally battering as Chekhov’s.” —Asymptote“Five flawless stories. . . . Nettel offers her keen attention and sympathy to any living thing struggling to get by.” —New York Times“Here is an utterly compelling memoir about a specifc body, which simultaneously conjures the fragility of that body, as well as the ever-shifting body of memory itself. Nettel has brilliantly found a form to contain the multitudes of what one body can hold.” —Nick Flynn“It has been a long time since I’ve found in the literature of my generation a world as personal and untransferable as that of Guadalupe Nettel.” —Juan Gabriel Vásquez “The Body Where I Was Born infuses the reader with an intimate portrait of the astute and wondrous depth that children use to observe and make sense of humanity. This book is fierce and from the gut. It is a testimony of a woman finding agency in her body because it is physical evidence that connects her to the planet and the rest of humanity.” —World Literature Today “Nettel’s work is spare, smart, and captivating.” —Signature Reads

It's unfortunate that Ms. Nettel only has two novels in English. This is a very gifted writer. Her characters feel so lived-in, it's clear she's drawn a great deal from real life, as she did in her debut novel. Oftentimes, a writer doesn't make the leap from short stories to novels, but Nettel is actually better in novels where she can languish in her characters and explore their nuanced trajectories. There's nothing sentimental here, but the longing in her characters that she gets to is so achingly real, you become deeply, emotionally invested them. This writer deserves a way bigger audience in America. I'm reading a lot these days, and some of the best literature is coming from Latin writers. And the U.K. with the sensational Sally Rooney. Just a great book, one that will pull you in and leave you filled in that way that there's no real meaning of satiety anymore. I just wish she would quit teaching and write more. She has so much to say about the Latin ex-pat experience, about love, about heartbreak, people who are searching for meaning in a bleak and lonely world that is existentially alienating. This is a writer who feels deeply and has the talent and the craft to educe those feelings and draw them to the surface.

Narrated in the first person by two main characters: Claudio and Cecilia, this novel broke me and rebuilt me at the same time. Nettel is becoming one of the most important voices of latin american writing, follow her closely, do yourself that favor!

I can't put into words adequately how much I owe John W. Robinson and now his co-authors for the joy he and they helped me find in the wildernesses of Southern California. I lived away from Southern California for many years and now am back. Naturally, I checked out these two beloved classics, *Trails of the Angeles* and *San Bernardino Mountain Trails*, to see if they'd been updated. Yes, they have been, and they've been given new, sturdier maps! How I look forward to renewing my love of both ranges again with Robinson & Co.'s help! *Trails of the Angeles* covers many of my favorite dayhikes, especially Mt. Lowe and Mt. Baden-Powell. *San Bernardino Mountain Trails* took me on many backpacks with friends plus my first solo backpacks, and the book covers my favorite Southern California wildernesses, San Gorgonio and San Jacinto. You can't go wrong with these two gems. See you on the trail! (I'll append this review to *San Bernardino Mountain Trails*, too.)

This is probably the most thorough and well written hiking guide for the San Gabriel Mountains that you'll find. I can't compare this 9th edition with the previous versions as I don't have any of the previous editions, however, I can tell you that this book is rock solid. Although the author John W. Robinson is retired, he has turned over the reins to Dough Christiansen to keep the content updated and accurate. And the transition is seamless.Unlike some hiking guides that give you overview information about the hikes, John W. Robinson (and Doug Christiansen) get into the nitty gritty useful hike details without going overboard. And based on the hikes I'm familiar with, the hike descriptions are very accurate.Sure they might forget a detail here and there. Like forgetting to mention the famous "Echo Phone" at the top of Echo Mountain that everyone takes their picture with and shouts through. A curious omission for sure, but certainly not anything that would affect the quality of your hike. But the authors DO provide the key information that you need to know. For example, I did a pre-hike to Big Horn Mine for an upcoming group hike and found all the hike details spot on. Even down to trail details like, "The old wagon road is an easy walk except for a washout near the halfway point that may trouble beginners and young hikers."Along with the very thorough coverage of the hikes, TRAILS OF THE ANGELES also provides a lot of background information and history. Granted, some hikers may find this unnecessary and even consider it fluff, but I find it very useful, informative and enjoyable. All in all, this is superb hiking book. Along with Afoot and Afield: Inland Empire: A Comprehensive Hiking Guide and San Bernardino Mountain Trails: 100 Hikes in Southern California, this book will be a valuable resource for many years to come.

I've this book and John Robinson's guide to the San Bernardino Mountains since 1980. To me they are the easiest to use, have the most information, and best directions to the trail head of any book I have (which are quite a few). The 8th edition had some new hikes in it that are not in earlier editions because access has been closed to hikers by the land owners. The new map is much clearer and sturdier (waterproof) than earlier editions. Extra copies of the map can also be purchased separate from the book if needed/desired. This book is a classic and the hikes it lists cover and area from just west of the 14 freeway to the western edge of the San Bernardino National Forest. With this book and his guide to the San Bernardino Mountains, you have a list of 200 hikes that cover everything from desert to alpine wilderness hikes, covering an area from the 14 freeway to Anza Borrego State Park. The book has a chart listing the hikes and their rating in the back of the book. This is handy so you don't have to flip through the book looking for 'easy' hikes if you're going with someone who is in the best of shape. The only thing I wish the chart had info on the time of year to hike the trail. Even easy hikes on the front range of the San Gabriel's can be miserable mid-summer.
