This book breaks the information down into various different diseases/conditions and what works and what doesn't work in terms of supplements.Unfortunately there is no summary broken down into the different supplements and what they are usefull for, but still a fair effort in pulling together a lot of research and studies on various vitamins and supplements. Additionally Mark Moyd correctly promotes healthy diet and lifestyle as first preference over supplementing. Were this the full picture I would have given his book 4.5 stars, however there are a couple of serious mistakes from someone who promotes themselves as a supplement guru. Mark keeps referring to vitamin B9 as Folic Acid, which is the synthetic form of the the vitamin B9 (the natural form is folate). Many people cannot process the synthetic version in their bodies and it can build up to toxic levels. This should never be promoted in any vitamin book. Secondly, he appears to be a believer in statins for treating high cholesterol. Anyone spending half an hour on the internet can find out how damaging and useless statins are in treating anything. For reference, research the names: Duane Graveline M.D. Dr malcolm Kendrick, Johnny Bowden PH.D. C.N.S. & Stephen Sinatra MD F.A.C.C.

The older I get, the more I resist running to my doctor for prescriptions, and yet, too often my body is sending me signals that one thing or another needs correction or tweaking. If I can solve it naturally, I try to do so-- though I do have a good doctor, and he helps to keep me healthy. He's not particularly well-versed in dietary supplements, however, so I have had to do much investigation on my own. I live 2 blocks from a wonderful natural foods store, and I can spend hours reading the labels on the various supplements-- and it can be enormously confusing. The info gleaned from Google searching is mind-numbing, and as soon as I get convinced of one thing, I will immediately find three articles to refute the same information.Author Mark Moyad is a "real" doctor, and has a great deal of experience and research under his belt. Each ailment is handled separately in a chapter, and he methodically rates supplements as to effectiveness. He then tells you what lifestyle changes could also address the malady, and he tells you what supplements don't work at all. He tells you not just what, but WHY.... without lapsing into long-winded scientific jargon that I can't understand. I bought the Kindle version so I can have his info in my bag when I'm out shopping. Currently, I'm following his advice for migraines, high cholesterol, and insomnia---- good results, so far!

Dr. Moyad has an impressive resume in his field. I've had the opportunity to attend one of his presentations in person and he is someone I found not just dynamic in his presentation but trustworthy, able to field any question that came his way and above all he seems to be extremely dedicated to his profession- my husband is a victim of prostate cancer and with that comes myriad questions on any number of issues from the diagnosis itself to his treatment, nutrition, supplements, battling side-effects of chemotherapy, managing his blood pressure, cholesterol and maintaining proper weight and a healthy diet and exercise regimen. Dr. Moyad address all of this in his book in an easy to read fashion- the book truly is a handbook that we reference constantly. I can't recommend it highly enough- especially since having the opportunity to meet him and see him in action personally. My husband and I trust his expertise and commitment to spreading information that is vital to a long and healthy life. He also takes the head-spinning wealth of marketing hype and misinformation around supplements and presents clear information on what is sound, safe information and instruction.

This book is a total waste of time and money. “A Trusted Expert”, I think not! This doctor is just another product of a teaching institute that takes it’s cues from the pharmaceutical companies. Death by pharmaceutical drugs is now the third leading cause of death in the U.S. Dr Moyad’s time would have been better spent applying his “70 Point Research Checklist” to pharmaceutical drugs. Then he could have provided something of real value.Supplements can be extremely beneficial, especially when you take the modern American diet into consideration.Do not believe much of the advise that is contained in this book. Do some followup research on your own to see where other “Experts” stand on the advice and use of supplements. For example, see how the Vitamin D Council’s advice compares to this authors recommendations regarding Vitamin D levels and supplementation. Also please do research when choosing the type, dosage, and brand of supplements that you put in your body. Unfortunately, the Centrum Silver that is recommended by this author is not something that I would call a high quality vitamin.His 7 recommendations in chapter 2 about ways to live a longer, better, and stronger life is the one of the only worthwhile parts of the book. If more American’s followed these type’s of preventative measures, the world off healthcare would look much different that it does today. Unfortunately this would have very negative effect on today’s profit driven corporate healthcare system who’s motto seems to be “a pound of cure can make up for an once of presentation. There is was other helpful bit of advice that I found to be helpful in this book. It was the authors advise to not mindlessly take supplements without a real objective or ailment. While I believe that pretty much everyone can benefit from taking a quality multi-vitamin, additional suppementation should always involve quality research and have a valid purpose. There are plenty of good resources aviable for research on myriad of health issues. The majority of people need to become much more involved when it comes to research and advocacy that are related to health issues.

Russell Mussio was born in Trail, BC where he spent his childhood years playing sports and exploring the Great Outdoors. Before graduating he took a year off to travel the world. From this experience Russell developed a passion for outdoor travel, which he was able to develop through his final year at university. Backed by a sponsor professor, he was able to explore two different outdoor recreation business concepts. The guidebook business that he and his brother stumbled across when exploring the wilderness around Vancouver seemed to be the most logical concept. That is where the idea for the Backroad Mapbook series was born.A The seed for Backroad Mapbooks was planted in 1993. Brothers Wesley and Russell Mussio were out exploring the maze of logging roads around Harrison Lake in southern BC on a cold, wet day. This is a book that is best read in small bites, which the format makes easy to do. Why small bites? Because it makes you consider your own life stories and reevaluate how you react to others and how you behave in uncomfortable situations. It is also a book that can be re-read with greater self-insight each time. The poems are lovely!

Gentle, kind and very easy to follow. Prayers are lovely.

Nice, not totally what I expected.

If you can get past some of the airy-fairiness of this one, there is some really powerful insight here. I'm sure I will be re-reading portions of this text for years to come.

This is definitely one book that makes you think , makes you cry and makes you realize it's better to let go of all the negativity we hold onto in our lives. It makes one reevaluate ones life and to let god into our souls

I loved this book. It is a spiritual journey regarding forginess. This is such an important paet of our lives and the author gently explains how freedom and serenity can be achieved so easily.

I just love this book....so profound, honest, spiritual and a joy to read. I truly feel the book is "life changing" and anyone from any religious background trying to overcome hardship, hurt, loss will benefit from Karen Kedar's brilliant yet down to earth book. I have left an abusive relationship and struggled with forgiving "him" but from this book I learned that forgiveness is for me. I have also read Kedar'S book "God Whispers" and love that book too....when I'm down and lost these are my "go to" books.

I found this title in the Judaica section of my local bookstore and was immediately enthralled... and no, I am not Jewish.I am, however, a writer - and Karyn Kedar shares her call to write this book when she says, "Write. About forgiveness. Write. A subtle echo of new life. Write." and I think every writer who has experienced a spiritual call will know, will understand, will nod alongside these words.YES! Write, we say, enthusiatically.This impressive book is about forgiveness without forgetting. It is about healing and wholeness. It shares its message through a combination of instructive prose, poetry (almost like songs or psalms) and a memoir style of writing.I couldn't help but write quotes as I read along - for example.... "Acceptance is the compassionate embrace of yourself and your place in the world: without judment, without fear, without regret. You are who you are. You are not who you are not."Simple, yes. Strong? Indeed!This universal message will (I hope and pray) find its way into the hands and hearts of readers of all faiths. Read it, embrace it, live it.

It is a sweet and wonderful adventure about a man and a yak who are best friends. The man gets sick, and he trusts his yak to help him. A touching and beautiful commentary on life, spirituality, connection, trust, kindness, and love. A wonderful, serene, and beautiful story for children and adults too, that helps teach about trust, love, and friendship. This story made me smile and feel good. I really enjoyed this, and children will, too! I highly recommend it.

What a lovely story about friendship. I love the simple wording and illustrations. This book is readable and very understandable by children. It leaves you feeling good inside. I know children will feel the love between the monk and the yak too. This will encourage children to know how to be a friend and also encourage helping others in their time of need. Very well done!

The Monk and the Yak is a cute tale that leaves an element of mystery as to how the monk mounted the yak inasmuch as he had no memory of how he arrived at the village. The reader is left with an admiration for the yak’s heroism. The book would appeal to children because there are not many stories out there about yaks.

Great story and illustrations! Sweet and easy to read with a message of true friendship and trust. I enjoyed the simple pictures which complimented the story. I would have liked to see the words on the same page as the pictures. I feel my kids would engage more if they were able to gaze at the scene while hearing the story. Overall great story!

Very sweet tale that really channels wisdom and love for life. We really love this "Buddhist" kind of tales, which give to children moments of wisdom and joy. The book teaches a message based on old wisdom, which is brought with lovely illustration and characters. I feel that this is a very beautiful combination and way to communicate this kind of messages to kids.

The Monk and the Yak is a picture book that is set in India at the foot of the Himalayas. The monk and his yak live and work peacefully side by side. One winter the monk becomes seriously ill so he dispatches a message with the yak to a neighboring village seeking help.When the monk finally recovers, he is astonished to find out the source of his recovery.The story is an inspiring one for readers in the elementary grades. Illustrations are soft and accurately convey the mood. I would suggest that the size of the font be increased as it is too small for young readers. Recommended especially for children ages five through eight.

This is a sweet story with an uplifting message! It would be wonderful for adults to read with young children.

Let me start by saying this book is truly like no other book I have ever read on the topic of World War Two. It reads like something that should have been made into a movie starring Humphry Bogart great actor like Burt Lancaster.It is a wonderful, gritty read, about men who defy the odds and try to escape Corregidor as the Japanese accept the surrender of American forces in the Philippines. It shows their anger, concern and desire to escape what they saw as a disaster. They wanted to take their chances.And they did. They sank their primary ship and took off on a thirty foot half-open boat with the idea of finding Australia. However, in the haste to leave the area they managed to leave without maps and sextant. This is the story of how they survived, may have even thrived in some areas, and managed to do the impossible.Inside of this book you’ll read what it was like to take big risks. They hid from Japanese patrols, aircraft and even destroyers. They ate what they could find and may have even run into South Pacific cannibals in their quest to escape imprisonment by the Japanese.But I don’t want to spoil this adventure for you. So I won’t say more.I have two regrets in regards to this book. The first is simply finding this book so late in my studies. It’s a wonderful read. It’s a treasure like finding Etched in Purple: One Soldier’s War in Europe by Frank Irgang. In fact, I think they were published within a year of each other about 1943.The other regret is I’ve not found a copy of the first edition, yet.

Outstanding book and most excellent, (and pleasurable), to read. Truly a story within a story. This escape from the "rock" of the island of Corregidor, Republic of the Philippines, was written in December 1942 and printed in March 1943. The wording and vernacular magically transports the reader back in time. The author and Captain of the 36 foot diesel boat, (that escaped the wrath of the Japanese), Lieutenant Commander John Morrill, writes about one of his shipmates who's stammering problem is akin to that of the likes of the King of England. Morrill has a plethora of similar references to different movie stars and other notables of that timeline. He often refers to WWI as the World War, (apparently WWII didn't have it's moniker when John wrote about his odyssey).The heroics of this 18 man crew and how they jelled as a team is inspirational. Their 31 day, 2000 mile escape to freedom is just downright phenomenal. John also talks about Longaskagawayan Point and his mission there, (before the fall of Bataan). He was told to put the kibosh on the Japanese by shelling them from the sea via his mine laying ship, the USS Quail. He mentions that the concrete poured for the pill boxes on that mountain coastline, (just west of the Island of Corregidor), were 2 - 5 years old. Meaning the Japanese had some serious plans that were in the works for years prior to the start of WWII. I have had the pleasure of visiting the "rock" when I was stationed at Clark AB, RPI, and remember quite distinctly that mountain side. The locals referred to it as "Kamayian Point". Kamay meaning hand in Tagalog. That side of the mountain jutted out from the Bataan peninsula in five fingers, (if you will), and was thought to be the ideal offensive position for the Japanese Imperial Army -- as it overlooked all shipping coming into and out of Manila Bay. It was reported that of the 400 Japanese defending that point, only 5 survived that deadly shelling, via the USS Quail and the big guns of Corregidor.A must read for the WWII enthusiast. Most of the 18 man crew that escaped went on to serve the US Navy for 20 - 30 years. John Morrill retired as a Rear Admiral. I'd rate this book six stars if I could. This is a World War Two story, about a Naval officer leading 17 other seaman in a daring escape from Corregidor, in a 36-foot naval launch, after Corregidor's fall in 1942. As this book was finished in December 1942, all events are fresh in the author's mind, and it shows in the details provided in this book. As it was written in the early 1940's, he uses slang and language from the era, which I found refreshing. The men are also portrayed as how we'd like to believe American men from the era were ... rugged, noble, and a little bit naive.This is a great real-world adventure written at a time when ultimate victory over the Japanese was not assured. Five stars.

Wow! Cmdr Hollis really spins a yarn -- except its' all true! Put in context, it was written (dictated?) Christmas 1942, when the outcome of WW II in the Pacific was still very uncertain and a lot of US Marines, Sailors, Soldiers and Airman -- as well as thousands of Japanese military and civilians -- were still to die. Knowing a little about navigating a small boat on the open ocean, this was a magnificent feat of seamanship, plus discipline and leadership. Found the epilogue also very interesting -- everyone went back to work fighting, training, several being killed in the process. These are the real heros of WW II. we'll never see their likes again.
