My sister and I used this book to guide us down the entire stretch of Route 66. It's took us 12 days to drive from Chicago to the Santa Monica Pier, which included a detour to the Grand Canyon. This book is awesome, and we wouldn't have been able to stay on historic 66 without it, but still invest in a good GPS as well. If using this book be sure to stop at the Merimac Caverns in MO and Midway Cafe in Adrian, TX.
I am using this guide to prepare a detailed road trip of Route 66 through the states of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. Of course, I am also consulting other well-known Route 66 guides and maps. Route 66 is a kind of special trip where the itinerary, sights, accommodations and dining changes frequently, so certain flexibility is needed. Moon's Route 66 Road Trip guide is very much a classical guide such as you might find for any other tourist destination published by well-known firms, with maps, pictures, addresses, phone numbers and prices of sights, hotels and restaurants. Plenty of side trips and anecdotes are included. If I could take only one guide book on my Route 66 trip (which fortunately is not the case), this one would be it. This is a first edition, and I hope that Moon will decide to publish new editions at an appropriate interval. The paperback version is preferable to the electronic version for my purposes.
We used this book on our Route 66 road trip from Rolla, MO to Flagstaff, AZ in March, 2018. It came in extremely handy and was a great travel companion. We couldn't stop at all the locations, so we would read about the cities that we had to bypass. It was easy to get into the cities, but sometimes a little challenging to get out of some of the bigger cities, only using the book. We did have to go off of Google Maps sometimes, but not too often.
Book had good info of sites to see. Passenger would have to read and follow. A few local maps but you'll need your GPS or map app.Worth the purchase, just to be sure to capture the sites. I like best the recommendation for which route option is best to take.
Love the way this book is outlined. So far, we used it to do a Route 66 trip from St. Louis to Oklahoma City. Descriptions and City listings made it easy to plan. Next up, St. Louis to Chicago.
We just completed our Route 66 journey and it was made better because of this book. We were able to visit quirky places and eat a good restaurants using this as a resource. It helped us keep track of Route 66 because in some places it seems to 'disappear'.
It's ok, not as good as I thought it would be..
This book was awesome; we didn't have as much time as we would have liked on Route 66 but the next time we definitely will be using this book again.
