I have very mixed feelings in regards to this box set. The box and the books are very well made, with nice thick pages, and of course great art. Volume 1 and 2 I enjoyed. The stories within were hit or miss, but on the whole I like them. Masamune Shirow really delves into some interesting ideas and concepts in those books, which made up for any lapses in story telling. Those stories which would shift from a jumbled mess, into a coherent story line with interesting characters, and then back into a jumbled mess again. And then there's the fact that one of the better stories simply ends abruptly, and the reader gets left hanging. Now, to break things down a little:Quality: Very high quality box set. You won't have to worry about tearing pages, and the outer box is very sturdy. All color pages also look great.Art: Fantastic. Love the gritty sci-fi landscape in the first two volumes.Story: Hit or miss. The better stories center more around the male characters, with less of a female presence in them. I know the Major, the female lead, is the poster child for the story, but often her presence detracts from things. Masamune's female characters are very one dimensional, and usually over powered to the point of removing tension from the story. I'm not bashing the character of the Major, there's some good parts with her, but she and the other females are perfect to the point of being lame. Mary Sue's people call them I think. On the other hand the male characters are much less perfect, and therefore much more interesting. Which leads me to the third volume:Volume 3: Looking for some manga panty shots? Then this one's for you. However, it has little else to offer, besides great art, which sadly isn't enough to bolster the terrible story line. A significant portion of this volume is half naked women positioned in various ways in a virtual environment as they receive information and give commands. Page after page after page of nonsensical commands, like: "Apply the neur-resonator -5.4d3 adapter on the ten forty system 8." -that was not from the story, but you get the point. I felt no connection to this story and couldn't even force myself to finish it. It literally consists of: Sexy females on page kicking butt or who have near total control of the situation. Now I have no problems with females kicking butt, it's one of the cool parts of science fiction, women being able to adopt roles not the norm for them, but the women in this volume are built like deities. No, scratch that, like Gods with a capital G. Deities have faults and are interesting, like many of the Greek gods, but Masamune's female characters on the whole are not interesting. He seems to have this feminine ideal of perfection running throughout as theme in The Ghost in the Shell.I don't know. In the end I suppose I might just have to reread Ghost in the Shell to try and find what others seem to love so much about this series. Whatever the case, the first two volumes were enjoyable, but the third was a total waste of money. If it's cheaper, I'd recommend picking up the first two books, and not bothering with the third. Honestly, I'd probably have given four of five stars if the the large third volume was not a part of this collection.
I am not going to give this two stars, as it is clearly meant for a different audience than myself. That being said, I had been somewhat interested in the original books for a few years so I figured why not...The first book is rather good, and would be a 4 or 5 if I were reviewing just that. The "1.5 human-error processor" which ***was collected and published a collection after volume 2 came out*** serves as an interquel is still interesting. The book "2.0 man-machine interface" is where my enthusiasm stops. The bulk of the story serves to show what diving into the computers would look like while also serving up generous fan service art that can be described at best as pandering.I would probably recommend the first volume as a standalone read, but the collected series is probably a pass for everyone except those who have probably already read this or are otherwise certain they will enjoy this in advance.(edited to reflect correction)
Overall quality is very nice but deletion of one of the scenes without little work to hide it like rewriting a dialogue or providing more softcore imagery instead bums me out.Update: it was only one panel deleted and author deemed it not so important for the plot but I still wish it was kept. Bumped rating by one star.
Such sturdy books with beautiful images. A great series. There is commentary from Shirow written below many pages to explain what things mean and what he was thinking.
Ghost in the Shell is an awesome anime and even more awesome managa. This is a must have for any fan of anime or GiTS!
