This book about the Earnhardt family was very fair and honest. So many times after a death the deceased is made into some sort of saint. The author does not fall into this trap. Dale, Sr. is presented as he was, with plenty of faults and many virtues. The book begins with a bit about Ralph Earnhardt, but the bulk is about Dale, Sr. and Junior. However, there is also space given to Kerry, Kelley, Teresa, Martha, Taylor, and even Jeffrey and Bobby Dale. Even though I've been watching NASCAR for 25 years, I still learned plenty from this book. Now about Teresa and DEI... A lot of people are really down on her, and it is hard to understand how she thought she had the right to deny Dale, Jr. the right to use his own name and prevent Kerry from using the Earnhardt name. However, it must be very difficult to be the widow of an icon, and to be a woman in NASCAR, which is a male dominated world. Perhaps she would have been better off to not try to run DEI, but until we walk a mile in her shoes, we shouldn't judge her without all the facts. I like the way the author tried to be fair to her, and I like the way he acknowledged that Dale, Jr. has been very classy and mature in the way that he has handled the conflict with Teresa in the media. I came away from this book with a lot of respect for Dale, Jr. and the way that he has matured and managed to stay down to Earth despite all the fame and fan adoration. This is a very thought-provoking, intelligent book. It is obvious that the author spent a lot of time researching and interviewing. This is not just a quickie fan bio. I hope he writes more books about NASCAR.
I purchased this book shortly after it was released, then put it to the side for a while before diving into it. As a lifelong Dale Earnhardt fan, I kinda figured I would be familiar with everything in the book. Truthfully, a lot of the stories and information will be familiar to anyone who followed Dale Earnhardt's career. But even a diehard Earnhardt fan can learn some new information here. For one thing, I like that the first two chapters are about Ralph Earnhardt. Precious little has been written about Ralph, so it was nice to learn more about him. One of the best lines in the book came in describing Ralph Earnhardt's smooth style that rarely tore up his equipment -- "a conservative trait that would skip at least one generation."The book also touches on Dale Jr., Kelley, Kerry, Taylor and Teresa Earnhardt, but, as expected, much of the book centers around Dale Earnhardt. Even as a lifelong Dale Earnhardt fan, I learned a bunch about the man that I never knew: The first racing trophy Dale Earnhardt ever won came at a slot car track in Kannapolis, and he kept that trophy is his office for decades. In the late 1970s, the hard-living Earnhardt used to get up every morning at 6:30 and play Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Gimme Back My Bullets" to help him wake up after a night of partying. Another interesting tidbit: Earnhardt's disdain for driver Geoff Bodine was so deep that he used a Bodine cardboard stand-up as a bow-hunting target.What I really liked about the book is that it is not just empty hero worship. Earnhardt's generosity is covered along with his flaws and shortcomings. The book contains numerous tales of Earnhardt being a "bastard," especially to the media, But it does create a fair and well-rounded profile. One interesting tale in the book is the story of Earnhardt waiting for no one when a race was over. If Earnhardt did not win (or at least run top three), no one was faster out of the track and on his plane to depart the speedway than Earnhardt. From the time Earnhardt parked his car after a race until he left the track was timed in as little as two minutes and 45 seconds -- and pity any driver who planned to catch a ride with Earnhardt back to Charlotte if they were not at the plane waiting to depart the track when Earnhardt arrived at his plane.The details of February 18, 2001, are obviously very familiar to any Earnhardt and NASCAR fan. But even in that section of the book, there was some information with which I was not familiar. Among the most notable stories in the book was the description of a dead Dale Earnhardt being wheeled into the same room where fellow driver Tony Stewart was being examined after his own frightening crash earlier in the race. Stewart had no idea Earnhardt has crashed on the last lap of the Daytona 500, and told hospital staff that he wouldn't mind if Earnhardt shared the room with him. Hospital personnel quickly turned around and replied simply "I don't think so."The book also touches on the scene at the hospital as Earnhardt's family, Richard Childress Racing employees and NASCAR brass learned the awful news. NASCAR vice chairman Mike Helton made the offer to allow anyone else in the room at the hospital to accompany him to the press conference to announce Earnhardt's death to the media. No one took Helton up on his offer.I also didn't quite realize the full extent of the rancor between Dale Jr. and Teresa as they tried to hammer out a contract extension. The book also mentions Dale Earnhardt's death being the driving force behind Rusty Wallace deciding to retire and enjoy his money while he still had his health. Another thing I did not fully realize until reading the book was how troubled Dale Jr. was when he would see stickers or images of a "3" surrounded by angel's wings or a halo. The book talks about Junior openly asking the people closest to him why fans would bring pictures of his father for him to autograph.I went with five stars on the review because the book truly is great. Even a diehard Earnhardt fan will learn some new information in reading this book.
Great read, hard to put down before I finally finished it.It went from before he was born right thru about a yearago, includes all the family members not just Dale him-self and you get a real feel of who he his family was.Would have given more then 5 stares if I could have.
This book is FAN - tastic, not just an excellent read for Earnhardt fans, but fans who have followed car racing from the beginning on dirt roads, dirt tracks, Daytona on the beach, races up to todays modern tracks. The hardships these brave men, their wives, children dealt with just to pursue their dreams. Many, many true stories that have never been revealed in the press. The author did an excellent job of taking the reader through the years of car racing up to present day. I recommend this book to any dedicated car racing fan.
I am so glad I ordered this book as it answered some questions about Dale that I was not aware of. I never realized that Jr. and his sister had it as rough as they did with their step Teresa. Their dad had a heart of gold off the track as Martha Earnhardt did.I recommend this to all of Dale Sr nascar fans as must reading to see how this dynasty came to be. This is the most interesting book I have read to date about Dale Earnhardt and his family.
A gift for my husband. He has enjoyed it very much. He is retired and has more time to enjoy reading . AS he read this book, he would tell me how he learned new information thruout the years about his favorite drive Dale Earnhardt and his son Earnhardt Jr. My husband has to be the biggest Dale Earnhardt Sr fan ever. And has been since a young man. We attended races thruout our early years of marriage taking our kids too, so for him to have learned new information , new stories about their racing lives and personal lives, is a plus reading this book.
I bought this for my son who is an extreme Nascar enthusiast right now. He tells me that this book has lots of great information that he wasn't previously aware of, and he finds the information very interesting and informative. It doesn't only surround Earnhardt Sr, but encompasses the entire family as well as other Nascar drivers as well. Very happy with this purchase. It arrived very quickly and securely packaged.
