First novel I read from Mark Edwards, I don't think I've ever read a book this size in so little time, and just when you think you'll never find another Stephen King, you do, and then your life as a reader gets fun again. 6 starz for this book is not enough at least in my opinion. Read it.

This story had everything I love in a mystery – a small town with secrets, a gloomy, isolated setting that’s potentially haunted, a legend involving a spooky old woman, who lives in the woods, and steals children, and at its centre, the mystery of a young girl, Lily, who presumably drowned two years prior. Add to that some memorable, relatable characters, and plenty of shocking plot twists, with an ending you won’t believe, and you have a book that definitely stands out from all the rest in this genre. Told from the POV of Lucas, who’s investigating the drowning, as well as flashbacks in Lily’s voice, detailing the events leading up to the day at the river. I was tickled pink that two characters from ‘Follow You Home’ had cameo’s, and that there was a shout-out to ‘The Devil’s Work’ as well. Buy it! You won’t be disappointed.

It is essentially a horror story but it is kind of “cozy horror” in a sense that it is not very gory. The book is very well written and perfectly paced; there was never a moment when I was tempted to stop reading or just skip few pages. It is also very easy to read, in part because characters are introduced gradually and therefore easy to remember. They are all very colorful and fun to read about. The story is told in the first person by the main protagonist who arrives at Writers Retreat to write his novel. The retreat is located in a remote location and the mystery of drowning deaths adds to the spookiness of the place. Was the drowning an accident, a murder or are supernatural forces at play as suggested by local folk tales? And what else is going on and for how long?I could sometimes guess what will happen in few next pages (which was actually a nice feeling) but the ending was a huge surprise and I enjoyed it very much. In my opinion this is one of the best books by Mr. M. Edwards and I highly recommend it to those looking for a light and engaging mystery.

It may have been the title, that first sparked my interest. I have been to a retreat – not a retreat for writers – but – it was a good experience. Both retreats were set in a forest, yet a town was somewhere not too far away. I could imagine the solitude, dark mysterious woods, being by the water, sudden unexpected sounds and in this book – a mystery. What could be lurking in the forest? Or indeed in the house? A lost little girl? Mother in mourning? Unfolding secrets? Yes, I could give this book a go.Mark Edwards is an author that certainly appeals to lot of people. He writes psychological mysteries involving regular, normal people. For this book he combined an actual event involving children – though not the one in this book – and the known fact that there can be strange beliefs held within different communities. Beliefs that will be guarded. The Retreat is set in Wales, which was of interest to me, and before I started I googled the place the invented town was supposed to be close to. Lovely hills and forests. Flowers too. Daffodils. Wild daffodils even appear in the book. The text of The Retreat flows very naturally and it is easy to read. Sentences are rather more short than long. Characters can be described with two distinguishing features like for example bald head combined with bad teeth. Mark Edwards is clearly able to use varied techniques to make the reader involved. There are cliffhangers at the end of the chapters and occasionally one has to wait a chapter, as the book goes back in time. Mark Edwards, however, does not overdo this. Though going back in time and unfolding gradually from the viewpoint of the lost little girl could be experienced as a bit of a cop out. And actually, I did not take long to read the book, but this was also because I had some time to fill. How should I rate the book? I am hovering between three and four. It is a light read and as such cannot get a five. Yet, it was entertaining and Mark Edwards worked hard to come up with a plausible scenario, even if it is a bit far fetched, and the final hit can be seen coming. I don’t consider that I have wasted my time, but after two pretty similar easy reads (The Retreat and The Chalk Man), I am now considering Margaret Attwood’s (Handmaid’s Tale) or a classic to satisfy me next.Stars: 3/5leeawrites.wordpress.com

I read in two days! Reminded me some of Mary Higgins Clark. Good detail and story resolution. If possible I would take a half star away for some nearly gratuitous R language. And a disturbing part I won't mention as it would be a spoiler. Still recommend though - an excellent Kindle value!
