From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2—A coal engine, a steam shovel, a snowplow, and a cable car are the big machines that Rinker and Rocco celebrate in the story of Virginia Lee Burton's creative life. Burton's young children, Aris and Michael, clamored for stories about big machines, so "Jinnee" responded by creating Choo Choo, Mary Anne, and the others. For readers not familiar with the stories, Rinker summarizes each over a few pages, imagining Aris and Michael's reactions. Rinker also introduces an element of wonder in the narration, describing Burton as magical and her artists' tools as wands. Rocco's illustrations help convey the magic of creation: to complete the top of Choo Choo's cab, he shows Burton climbing up the ladder that she has just sketched so that she can reach. Rocco also pays tribute to Burton's early passion for ballet by depicting her creation of the big machines as graceful full-body gestures. Elements of Burton's illustrations and attention to design appear in Rocco's art: the puff of smoke above Choo Choo's smokestack contains a visual summary of the engine's adventures. This is a lovely tribute, both to a marvelous creator of books for children as well as the creative process itself. VERDICT Recommended for most picture book biography collections.—Jennifer Costa, Cambridge Public Library, MA

★ "The beautiful symbiosis of text and art works on several levels—as a biography, a study of the artist's creative process, and a demonstration of the themes of change and survival evident in Burton's picture books. Alive, bursting with color and action, this volume introduces Virginia Lee Burton to a new generation of big machine enthusiasts." —Kirkus, starred review ★ ". . . [E]nchanting portrayal of Virginia Lee Burton . . . Prime material for classroom author studies and a lively, imaginative introduction to Burton’s classic picture books." —Booklist, starred review "Burton’s fans will enjoy teasing out the visual references to her work, both in Rocco’s use of color and form (including several circular vignettes), while feeling intimately connected to how these treasured stories came into being." —Publishers Weekly "Anyone even passingly familiar with the Burton canon will appreciate Rocco’s close emulation of Burton’s work; he goes a step further, though, by casting Jinnee and the boys as players in a story done in her visual style." —Bulletin "This is a lovely tribute, both to a marvelous creator of books for children as well as the creative process itself. Recommended for most picture book biography collections." –School Library Journal "Rocco’s paintings of the artist at work and his replicas of her illustrations are masterful... [Big Machines] provides an intriguing, loving introduction to a picture-book icon." –Horn Book

Whether or not you're familiar with the classics MIKE MULLIGAN'S STEAM SHOVEL and THE LITTLE HOUSE (though if not, check them out!) you'll love this unique bio about their creator, author/illustrator Virginia Lee Burton, "Jinnee". Sherri Duskey Rinker, of bestseller GOODNIGHT GOODNIGHT CONSTRUCTION SITE fame, describes Jinnee as "magical" and it's an apt description for the entire book. The text is lyrical and lovely, offering insight without slowing down the story. And the illustrations by Caldecott-Honor winning author/illustrator of BLACKOUT, John Rocco, are gorgeous - referential but entirely his own. A wonderful classroom addition to discussions of author/illustrators, and women creators. Kids will love the big machines and the little house moving from city to country. The whole package is a stunner.

This is one of the best children's books I've ever read. It was so sweet! If you are a Virginia Lee Burton fan, then do yourself a favor and grab a copy of this book!!!!

If you love Virgina Lee Burton's books you will love this short biography of her. I appreciate how the artist gently mirrored Burton's style and brought her life's story to us all. A great first biography for kids, and a sweet, short look for adults.

Husband bought the book for our newborn. fun graphics!

Received as expected

Great book

A picture book biography of author/illustrator Virginia Lee Burton that primarily focuses on her inspiration for her books, her sons.I knew absolutely nothing about Virginia Lee Burton other than that she was an author/illustrator. It was enlightening to find out that she had two little boys obsessed with machines and that inspired her to make books about snow plows, trains, and steam shovels. It makes sense. Make sure you read the author's note in the back of the book to learn a little more about Burton. This would be a fantastic companion read for Mike Mulligan's Steam Shovel or Little House. And let's not fail to mention John Rocco's illustrations. He does an AMAZING job. He imitates Burton's illustration style so very well to show her illustrating, and then his own illustrations of Burton and her sons are beautiful and more life-like to make them stand out. Stunning art and informative back story.

Delightful! Powerful, magical, and full of life was the magical author/illustrator favorite, Virginia Lee Burton! Learn about her magical ways in this delightful biography written by Sherri Duskey Rinker, and illustrated by John Rocco! Published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.A beautiful tribute to Virginia Lee Burton.#mustread #biography #authorillustrator #VirginiaLeeBurton
